Everything is done electronically at Mar - there are no staff to greet you on arrival - but fortunately things went smoothly for us. The room was quite simple and unadorned. Fine for a summer stay but in colder weather it would lack a cosy feel. It was a bit frustrating trying to get comfortable reading on the bed as the pillow was small and there were no other cushions or pillows or spare blankets. The bathroom was clean and functional (we had our own). The corridors did smell a bit odd (a bit fishy??) but this did not extend into the room. 

Functional, fine for a single night

I normally don’t write negative reviews, but I would like to helpful to whoever needs information about this guesthouse. 
It is over expensive for the service offered. The room was smelly, the toilets too. The hot water in two showers was not working. The general athmospere was not pleasant. The window in the room was not closing! The owner guaranteed reimbursement but never received. Even booking.com was unable to communicate with the host. If you need a place in grindavick avoid this guesthouse.

Don’t go there!!

A top notch property! Everything about this place is first class. On site laundry is the best. We had a studio which was amazing. Close to blue lagoon if you’re going there, also close to volcano which is erupting. There are several restaurants nearby.

We stayed at Mar the night before we flew out from KEF. We also visited Blue Lagoon that day. The location was great for both of these things, easy drive. The room was good sized and clean. The shades could have been a little darker but we were so tired it was no big deal.

Everything we could have wanted! A large area for 3 people, with sitting and dining area too. Well- equipped kitchen area within apartment although we didn’t use it as restaurant next door ( Bruin) is great. Beds very comfy. Check- in using a code sent by email was no problem.

Ended our Iceland experience at Mar Guesthouse as it is close to the airport (approx 25 minutes drive) and close to Blue Lagoon (10 minutes drive)

It’s ok for bridging / short stay. Cleanness needs to be improved. 
Rooms were very big and beds comfy.

Ok for one night. Close to airport. 

First arrived on a Thursday morning. Hotel looked nice. Room looked new and smelled good. It was a nice day out, the doors on both ends of the main hallway were open. Wonderful. As more people started checking in I noticed the smell became more apparent - poop. The bathrooms don't have any real ventilation aside from venting out into the hallway. If you're staying in a "middle" room near the 4 bathrooms this is what you are going to smell when you're here. The doors to each room all slam shut, unlike the last hostel I was at where although it was run down the doors all shut quiet as a whisper. I guess there's give and take to each place but I'd rather stay in a run down place that doesnt smell like poop and that doesnt wake me up when ever someone leaves or enters their room. Also the wifi is slow (5mb down hard cap) and the TV doesnt work, not a big deal with the TV but why have it if the channels are just non stop pixelation. They did have nice shampoo/conditioner/lotion. Worth the money? Yes. Would I stay here again? Poop no.  In general, avoid Grindavik, not much is happening here. Stay in Reykjavik or Reykjanesbær.

Room, hallways smelled like actual poop

This was my first stay after arriving in Iceland.  It is close to the airport.  Modern, simple room but it lacked outlets to charge your camera and cellphone.  After hours checkin is done with a lockbox and you are given a code thru your notifications with the property.  Somewhat impersonal but the job got done.  There were 4 bathrooms on the 2nd floor.  One was out of order and the other---the lock did not work, so there were only 2 working bathrooms for the whole 2nd floor.  I had to call for directions, but she had difficulty explaining to me how to get to the property even though I told her where I was.

We booked the studio with a sea view for the last night of our trip for ease of access to Keflavik Airport the next day and were pleasantly surprised by the room.  It is listed as a studio and it is a large studio flat with 3 single beds, a small kitchen, small seating area with a sofa, its own bathroom and a large built in wardrobe.  It would certainly serve someone well as a home.  The price was very good for the amount of space that you get.
We only stayed one night and the weather was bad so we didn't see very much of Grindavik but the guesthouse appears to be by a port and part of an industrial estate.Noise wasn't a problem, and if you are just using the room as a stop off for other places it is excellent.
It is worth mentioning that the local Netto is only open until 7pm so if you are self catering you will want to get your shopping in.  There is Papa's Pizza just up the road which did good pizza (for Iceland ;)
The rest of the block felt slightly liked a shared dormitory and we wondered if fisherman stayed there when not out on their boats,  but overall the building was clean and quiet.
The room represented excellent value for money and would be a good stop-off point for people coming from Keflavik but not wanting to go via Reykjavik

A great start/end point for your trip

The mar guesthouse is a place without having contact with anyone working there. You will receive a pin via mail to open a small locker with the room key inside. I had an issue with not receiving the mail and the answered within minutes via Facebook, which is great service. Also, via their website it is possible to get better prices than via booking.com
The room was clean and functional. There were 4 bathrooms upstairs. Unfortunately, some were on the dirty side. I recommend staying here when visiting the Blue Lagoon and having an early flight the next day. In Winter, there is no cafe for breakfast in the nearness.
