We book a room with  2 beds and private bathroom in toucan hostel  we came. In the night there was no hot water... The Chinese receptionist didnt tell us about this and we did check in normally... Then we ask for help  No solution so no shower..  If u can avoid this hostel do it..

The worst experience in Budapest

So I absolutely can't agree with the positive reviews. The clean and neat-looking pictures are just a farce and don't match the slightest of what I found in this hostel. The hygienic conditions were under all the noise. The kitchen was chaotic and dirty high ten. The bathrooms/toilets (both are together in very small cabins) were partly so dirty that you felt dirtier than before after washing. In my supposedly fresh bed I first found old food leftovers, laundered hair and foam from the previous user on arrival. It was similar for my fellow travelers. It was an absolute no go. This hostel is no longer recommended apart from the good location.

Disastrous hygiene conditions

the owner of the hostel was a horrible person.I booked a private 2-bed room 2 months before check-in time.he sent me an email one week before check in,saying this is the last notification,due to over booking, my reservation is going to be cancelled or changed.the owner refused to execute my order.he called the police when I was there.he also lied that he sent me a cancellation confirmation which I never received.when he was asked to show it to us,he couldn't fine it!! he even blamed the system of hostelworld. a very bad experience with this hostel.

a very terrible experience

A small hotel in a fantastic location in the centre of Budapest - 2 supermarkets within a minute’s walk, 3 minutes from Szimpla Kert ruin bar and Karavan street food and 10 mins from main square. 

Very friendly and welcoming staff who seem to work all hours of day and night to keep customers happy. There is a good sized kitchen with a fridge for guest use and also several communal bathrooms. 

Rooms are basic but adequate, however lacking more storage space and hooks for jackets, towels etc...  Main downside was the dirty showers and toilets that definitely needed a clean. 

Overall I’d recommend as it is extremely reasonable for the price, however don’t expect luxury!

Excellent for the price - AMAZING LOCATION

I came to budapest to enjoy the Sziget music festival. It was hugely popular and on the weekend so despite being full they did everything they could to help me in a hard situation. The service was extremely friendly, welcoming and professional. And despite being full they were very clean and tidy and could tell all the other guests were having a great time too. Thanks so much, I will be back!

Last minute heroes, wonderful hostel

It really enjoyed my stay in the Hostel. The staff are all real friendly and helpful. The kitchen had everything that one would need. Location is perfect with a Tesco and a Spar a minutes walk from the hostel. Dont understand people complaints about the lack of security in the place as there was two doors pin protected leading into the hostel and the rooms locked by key
 The beds in the room were very comfortable and the fan in the room was very welcome. Overall would recommend the place if one was looking to stay in a hostel in central Budapest

An Enjoyable Stay

I loved this place!! There were 7 of us in an 8 bed room and we had 2 keys between us. No lockers but rooms can be locked and staff willing to look after your possessions if needed. Also codes are needed to enter the building so quite secure. Staff extremely friendly. Big rooms comfy beds and we had a fan so it was nice and cool at night. Right in the centre of the city there's a tescos on one side and a bar on the other. Great for travelling on a budget we had a great week.

Friendly and comfy place great value for money

I’ve stayed in many hostels, and I know not to expect 5 star service, but unfortunately staying at Toucan was a huge disappointment and the worst experience I’ve had in a hostel.
Throughout the 3 night stay there was the same lady on reception, she seemed nice but didn’t know any English. I’m not ignorant enough to expect everyone should speak English, but when she asked us to translate words on her phone it was to Chinese not Hungarian. She told us we couldn’t pay on debit card, so paid cash and she wouldn’t give us a receipt. We said we needed one, as communication was so hard we wanted to make sure our payment was sorted. It took us 3 attempts over 4 hours to get this receipt, and in the end an American guy had to step in and help. The receptionist called the hostel owner who spoke to my friend, and he agreed a receipt should be given and the receptionist should know how to do this? I don’t think she knew how to do her job, and I’m sure the card machine was working she just didn’t want to use it. During the 3 night stay the rooms were never cleaned, sheets changed or bins emptied. The 24hr reception and daily maid service does not exist as a lot of the time reception was empty and no method to call for help. We were given 1/4 a roll of loo paper with the room, ended up stealing loo rolls from bars as after the receipt fiasco we didn’t think it was worth asking!!

Avoid this hostel

We booked this hostel on time and we didn't have much faith, but the truth is that we were surprised, especially by the good disposition and attention of those at the reception. Always willing to help in whatever was within their reach. My partner got sick and he took care to get her more shelter and even got her tea.
