This January, after landing in Guatemala City, I drove directly from to Chiquimula to visit friends and explore the area. When I arrived at Hostal Casa Vieja, I was greeted warmly and was happy to see that there was ample parking inside the hotel grounds. The room looked out at the expansive, tranquil and well-maintained garden, where I spent time relaxing on a hammock in the shade of the large trees. I highly recommend seeing the ruins at Copan, which is about an hour away from Chiquimula. Crossing the boarder into Honduras took about 30 minutes each way, and we hired a tour guide at the archeological site, which was worth it.
