Symi Filoxenia consists of 2 self-catered apartments owned and operated by a very friendly family based in the remote bay of Marathounta. We stayed for 3 nights in August 2020 in the ground floor apartment (no sea view, but didn’t need one - the apartments are virtually on the beach!) 

It was all a bit of a gamble as we had no idea what to find given all the turmoil elsewhere at the moment. We shouldn’t have worried; Symi and, in particular, Marathounta couldn’t be further from it all.

The pebble beach is incredible, with some of the clearest water I’ve seen (even in Greece). The right side of the bay is teeming with a variety of fish. Bring a snorkel! We had the beach largely to ourselves, with a few day trippers topping it up during the day, but vanishing again by late afternoon, although the goats - a perennial favourite - will remain your trusty companions.

We mostly ate at the excellent Taverna Marathounta where the waitress (Magalia?) and chef (Stavros) serve fantastic food - think Symi shrimp, salads and fresh fish cooked on an open grill - accompanied by infinitely drinkable wine and quintessentially Greek hospitality.

The Taverna is open for breakfast at 10am through to an early dinner (especially for Greece) at 6.30pm. Gialos was busy and has many other eating options for those not using the self-catering facilities at the apartment (for which you will need to come prepared - we did not!)

The apartment was spotlessly clean and would be good for a family (one double room and another room with 2 singles). There is air conditioning throughout and a patio with loungers, although we didn’t spend much time at the apartment as the beach was so close. Gina, a lovely and very gentle German Shepherd, will take care of it for you in your absence.

Merkourios, a son of the family, very kindly took us from and to Gialos at the beginning and end of the trip (taxis are available but be sure to book ahead - your hosts or the Taverna will book for you - and cost €25 to get from one end of the island to the other, rising to €30 at night). Water taxis are usually available though were not at the time of writing due to reduced demand during the pandemic.

We took a walk to the stunning bay of Panormitis, a monastery dedicated to St Michael. It’s only 3.5km from Marathounta, but leave early and take water if travelling in summer (as you’ll be walking back in mid-morning sun). It’s worth it. You might even join some of the really dedicated pilgrims who have gotten up at 5am to do the vertiginous 25km walk from Gialos.

All in all it’s a slice of unspoilt Greek island loveliness - you won’t regret it.

Gamble that paid off

Very comfortable and clean apartment, very large terrace very beautiful with spectacular views of the marathunta bay, with gazebo and dining table. Practically on the beach!! Beautiful sea!! Very kind and available owners!

It's beautiful.

Great place for peaceful vacations with family. Nice apartment, very comfort and equipped with awesome sea view. You can enjoy beautiful sea with clear water. Near by is panormitis monastery....must visit!

Family vacations

Our apartment was very clean and equipped with all the comforts on the ground floor with a garden view, but on the way out we were practically on the beach!! Fantastic location with a folkloric beach frequented by carpets that rotate between the umbrellas. On the beach there is an excellent restaurant and a bar that offer free beds and umbrellas.

That's great!

If you want peace and quiet, to completely escape but experience Greek islands then this is the place to come. 

The apartment is fabulous and so well appointed it has everything you could need. Lovely and clean and spacious.

The beach is literally a stone's throw away although is can get busy with day trippers, it still manages to be peaceful and before you know it you will have the place to yourself again. 

There is a taverna and a coffee shop but nothing else, so come prepared. The apartment has a great kitchen so you can easily prepare simple meals.

If you want a tranquil experience in a great apartment then this is the place to come

Wow!

We visited Symi.beautiful island  good restaurants  and cafes people also friendly  go back again to visit took hour on the boat from Rhodes then after we went to the monstery that was  beautifully. Was well worth visiting.

Holiday

We stayed 6 nights. First, the appartment is very good for a family, one room had double bed, one room to single beds. Everyrhing is very clean and the kitchen equipment includes all necessary staff. The family is very helpful. Kosta, the father, has his own boat and took us twice to the famous beaches for free. He took me to fishing as well. Satiris, the son, is also ready to help, whatever you need. Kyriaki, the mother, cooked twice for us. Her cookies were delicious as well. The beach Marathouda is excellent, but not sand, it is pebble and stones. However, it is quite and water is very clear.

It is 20 km away from city center. The taxi costs 25 Euro, one direction. By the way, two nights, Kostas and Satiris took us to the center. 

Fantastic stay 

Filoxenia is a very new property that is now used as a guest house. The whole apartment belongs to us, and it was really very nice, clean. It has 2 proper bedrooms and a large fully equipped kitchen with Wifi. There is a very big terrace with sun beds and table. 
But what makes this place amazing is the owner of the house, Sotiris is an amazing guy, now our friend as well. He was very helpful by giving us any information we need, making us feel that as if we are living on the island. 

There are only few beaches in Symi that you can reach by car (others are accessible only by boat) and Marathounda is the best of all. We had the chance to see all of them and together with its facility, restaurant, beach combination its our favourite. 

Definitely the place I strongly recommend to stay!!!!!
