KK Houses

Loved staying here. It is a steep climb but so worth it for the quality of the accommodation and the  view. We had 4 nights here and loved the house and Hydra. Very well appointed kitchen, bathrooms, living area and bedrooms with welcome beers and soft drinks provided.
The view from the top house was amazing and so romantic.


After climbed up several stairs, we arrived in a beautiful apartment. A wonderful apartment with to nice bedrooms, lovely bath, big living room and kitchen, and a eksepsjonell terrace with the most beautiful wiev. So nice to sit outside early, early morning and listen to the goat's bell's, the rooster crows and the sound from the donkey, kind of yoga. Also nice sunset from the porch. Lovely owners. They have also washing machine. Can really recommend this. 

We arrived at Hydra travelling from Aegina Island as we booked KK Houses for a week as we wanted to see Hydra as its a strictly car free, bike free island. The only method of getting around is the water taxis to various beaches, your two feet and/or pack donkeys. We were met as we disembarked from the boat by a gentleman and his two donkeys which was arranged for us by our host. All of our luggage plus water was loaded on these donkeys and we made the trek to KK. Now a small caveat, if you do not enjoy walking or climbing stairs then this may not be for you. However we loved it. On arrival we were met by our host who showed us to the house. We were so delighted as we were impressed with the location of the house with its huge veranda overlooking the valley and ocean below.

The house is in a beautiful location complete with all modern amenities, large modern air conditioning units which are welcome after being in the heat most of the day. The bedroom is spacious, air conditioned and very comfortable. There is ample storage space for all of your bits and pieces. The kitchen /diner/living room is open plan and has all the necessary utensils to make a meal. It is complete with a large US style refrigerator with plenty of space to keep your groceries fresh. You do not need to buy water as you can drink the water here. The bathroom has a powerful shower and bathtub. There is also a very good washing machine which was important as we had changes of clothes daily due to walking everywhere and we like ti stay fresh.

Access to the shops and restaurants of which there are plenty is about a 10-15 minute walk. You have to walk down approx 200 steps. It may seem daunting as you know you have to make the climb up on your return. This did not put us off even though we are both in our fifties. It was good exercise and to be frank given the views from the house and the quietness of the place, it was well worth it. 

Our host ensured we had everything we needed and even though he lived on site, we hardly saw him, but we could call him if and when we needed anything which was not the case as everything was pleasantly provided. There is so much to explore on Hydra and as its a walking island, you have the pleasure of walking everywhere without any motor cars except the garbage truck and a fire engine. There are many restaurants to explore although we enjoyed buying some groceries and sitting on our spacious veranda enjoying the warmth, stillness and quiet of the evening. The only sounds were donkeys occassionally braying in the valley. We explored the island and walked to a few beaches, ate at a few restaurants, bought lunch at the bakeries ( fournos in Gk ).

If you want a great location, a comfortable clean house replete with all modern utilities and you don't mind the steps, then KK Houses is a great choice. We loved it and will certainly return to this magical island.



After scouring the internet to find a quiet place to rent for a week I came upon a place which looked fabulous, namely KK Houses. It is situated about 10-15 minutes from the harbour. On arrival at the beautiful island of Hydra, we were met by a gentleman and his two donkeys to take our luggage up the hill and steps to our house on the hill. this was all arranged by the owner of KK Houses. Please note Hydra is a walking island and the only transportation is any one of the 500 donkeys which will miraculously carry all of your baggage. Its amazing how they load it all on the donkey. Please note if you are averse to walking and climbing steps then this island may not be for you as there is no other transportation available except boats and donkeys.
On arrival we were greeted by the owner of KK Houses and he showed us to our house which was idyllic. The rooms were light, airy, well furnished with a modern kitchen and all of the utensils and bits and bobs you need to make any meals. Everything we needed was there, it was akin to a home away from home. The balcony was wide with beautifully comfortable sun lounges and a view of the valley and the sea which was incredible.The only noises we could hear were the donkeys baying and the cockerels in the morning with  no traffic noses, no fumes, only quiet and clean air. The bedroom, the bathroom and kitchen/diner were all spacious with excellent giant air conditioning units which were most welcome after a day in the heat. The owner of KK ensured we were well looked after and occasionally dropped in to see if we needed anything. Other than that we were completely alone in the house and most of the time, you could hear a pin drop as it was so quiet, which is what we wanted. The waterfront is spectacular and you can take sea taxis to many of the nearby beaches or you can walk, but some of them will take you anywhere from 30-60mins. There are many shops, restaurants at the waterfront, but make sure you walk around the back streets as there some beautiful rooftop restaurants, great bakeries and small deli's. Hydra is slightly more expensive than some of the other islands we have stayed on, but it is well worth the trip, especially if you are a walker. If you want accommodation which is spacious, well equipped, has an incredible host and spectacular views then I highly recommend KK Houses.

A long overdue review. 

The 10 minute uphill walk from the harbor is well worth it.  The accommodation's private, inviting balcony provides sweeping views of the Aegean Sea and town of Hydra. Ideal for couples or families, the balcony is large with tables and chairs. Perfect for drinking wine or playing cards while taking in the million dollar view. Large french doors open up to views-- I loved leaving them open, allowing the ocean breeze to roll in and waking up to the sound of roosters.  KK Houses-- while convenient to a number of restaurants, bars and hiking trails-- its entrance sits on a quite pedestrian street, removed just enough from the noise and hustle of the harbor and ferry arrivals/departures.     

I would stay here again in a heart beat. My one caution is that, like much of Hydra, the cobblestone pedestrian streets leading up the hill to the houses may be difficult for those traveling with elderly or disabled- you may be better served staying on the harbor (with that said, once in the house I cannot imagine a better place to sit back, relax and read!).  If traveling heavy, I would recommend splurging for a donkey or cart to help carry your luggage to the KK Houses.
