Hippocampus Hotel

Lovely small Greek hotel well positioned on bus routes. Good choice of breakfast and a good evening menu. Hotel is well looked after and bedroom was very clean with a good size balcony and big bathroom. A bit of road noise at the front of the property but this didn’t bother us. Many good restaurants within a few minutes walk and Rhodes town a short bus ride or love walk if your feeling energetic. My wife and I had a brilliant holiday.

The hippocampus hotel was very nice and smart hotel ,,,the staff were very friendly and smiling *** the chef Kostas make the best mousaka food traditional Greek food.the breakfast was top**

We stayed at the hotel Hippocampus in July 2023 for 2 glorious weeks. It’s a small family run hotel -they can’t compete with some of the big names on the strip but they do make up for it with great hospitality and general welcomeness. 
Pros: amazing food, its one of the best tavernas in ixia, we tried most of theme and these guys truly know what they are doing👌🏼 delicious cocktails, good location close to the beach bar with sun-beds and pebble beach. Also bus stop just outside of the hotel, pretty convenient for a day trip to Rhodes town. Clean rooms & facilities, helpful management- organised one trip and hire car for us- thank you so much! Great AC, we visited during 2023 heatwave and our room temp was quickly going down to whatever we wanted it to be. 
Cons: rooms are rather small which wasn’t a big issue for us but could do with more storage space in the bathroom, perhaps shelf or 2 could be usefully especially if staying for longer. 
Otherwise it was a great stay and we would like to thank the staff at Hippocampus for making it even better, you guys are heart and soul of this place, keep it up, we would love to visit again if we ever return to Rhodes🙂

Today is the penultimate day of our stay at the Hippocampus Hotel in Ixia and what a lovely experience it has been! Wonderful people running the hotel and they are all very friendly and accommodating.

Our room has a big balcony, comfy beds and a decent shower. Worth paying a bit extra (EUR7 per day) for the air-conditioning. There is also a small safe at no extra charge.

Lovely food and drinks at reasonable prices (you should try the Bloody Mary!) and good coffee, too, which is essential for me.

When it comes to running a hotel, Costas, his wife and their son, Kris, are really on top of their game.

Also, a big thanks to George, who arranged a great trip for us to the beautiful island of Symi. A fast boat and transfers included made for a really lovely day. Cheers, George!

We met some lovely people staying at the hotel - big up to Jo & Craig and John & Aisla, it was a pleasure to meet you!

We are already looking forward to returning to the Hippocampus next year. Thanks again to all concerned.

My partner and I stayed at the Hippocampus at the end of September/beginning of October for 11 nights. It has been very easy to see why this hotel is rated so highly on trip advisor. The staff truly are incredible. George kindly booked us a great excursion for a day trip to Symi which included transfers. We had such a great day.  George very kindly arranged for a 'to go' breakfast for us since we were picked up at 8am and before the start of breakfast at the hotel. I was blown away. Kostas and Chris were a pleasure to see every morning for breakfast, and all the rest of the staff also always had smiles on their faces and were ready to do anything to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We liked our room (209) and will genuinely be back... hopefully next year.    Oh yes, and the food is as incredibly as all the other comments mention. Many thanks and see you soon Hippocampus!

Incredible warm welcoming staff,, can’t praise them enough for their fun, humour  helpfulness and overall professionalism.

Just leaving the hippocampus after a two week stay in rooms 209 and 210. 
Lovely location. Very clean with fabulous food & friendly staff who make you feel more like family than a resident.

Very clean hotel, very comfy bed, air conditioning good. Staff really nice. Restaurant is very good. Location is good. Shops around are good for getting some stuff. Breakfast is very basic but ok we never had any issues with anything. Would recommend if you want a hotel with a good location and good food and staff 

We arrived in time for dinner after a short transfer from the airport. 
The restaurant is lovely and we ate there 3 evenings during the week. Traditional Greek cuisine with plenty of vegetables.
Rooms are very clean and beds are comfortable. Plenty of hot water in the shower room. 
Cooked breakfast is good and served with croissants toast butter honey and jam. Coffee or tea and orange juice. Waiter service is very good.
We appreciated having a kettle and cups in the room also. Plenty of shops around the area including a large SPAR supermarket. Easy bus transport to Rhodes town. Tickets from the little shop are cheaper than buying on the bus. Air conditioning is extra but so good in the heat. Tourist tax is only 50cents per night per room.
All staff are very friendly and fun and the live music on Saturday and Tuesday nights were a lovely surprise.
A very relaxed and friendly atmosphere and we thoroughly enjoyed the week.

Lovely small Greek hotel

We’re just back from our 11 night holiday at the Hippocampus hotel and really enjoyed our stay. Reviews contradicted each other so thought we’d put our thought together to help other travellers. 

Good points: we arrived at 11pm at night and the night porter was very helpful and friendly. He showed us to our room, turned on the aircon as he asked if we wanted it, and said to speak to George in morning for payment. 

Breakfast was good. The young man who does the breakfast service is quite endearing and explained our options and always gave us good service. The breakfast options although few, were always fresh and hot. Breakfast was between 8-11am so you never felt rushed and there was always a table. 

Rooms are adequate in size. We were in room 201. It had a little balcony which was suitable for our needs. Bathroom was okay too, clean towels, shower was a bit ‘old’ and leaked a bit onto the bathroom floor but it didn’t cause us any problems. Always plenty of hot water and powerful too.

Cleaner was very thorough and room kept very nicely for our stay. Sheets and towels changed regularly. 

Hotel location was perfect for us. Close to beach, bars and restaurants at the quieter end of town. 

As there was no pool, we took advice from fellow holidaymakers for a couple of pool days at the Villa De Mar apartment complex resort just down the road. It is cheaper than beach sunbeds (€5 at Villa De Mar) and a good option if you miss a pool. 

Bus stop pretty much right outside hotel and €2.5 euro each to Rhodes town- just be patient at busy times as some buses are ‘full bus’ on front and you need to wait for the next one. Taxis can be hailed down and are approx 10€ to Rhodes town.#You can pay contactless on all buses even back from Rhodes town and dont need to get tickets as stated at bus stops#

Not so good points: we found George quite hard to track down over the first few days to pay our taxes and aircon bill. Initially we saw George the first morning after arriving late the night before to pay our bill, but George had a problem with taking a card payment due to technical issues with his card machine and wanted cash. We agreed to get cash out, but didn’t see George again for the next 3 days as we were out before he got in and we missed him as he’d gone home before we were back later in the day. We arrived home on our 4th day to a note under the door to say that we still needed to settle our bill. On waiting around the next morning, George still had the same ‘card payment problems’ so we got cash out, as were other people also asked to do. 

Regarding Aircon; we chose aircon €7 per night but on reflection probably didn’t really need it as the rooms have got metal electric shutters to keep the heat out. We did not find these until a few days into our holiday, so near that in mind as it was September and you may not need aircon. 

There are tea and coffee making facilities and initially you are provided with teabags and coffee /sugar sachets BUT these are not replenished after using the initial ones so you would need to buy them if you didn’t take any with you. The same for the toiletries. A small shampoo/ conditioner/ shower gel, but not replaced when used. Not a problem as we took our own, but to be aware of. 

The hotel restaurant was not very inviting. We went every day for the bed and breakfast option which was perfect, but in the evening there were few people in there, no ambiance or music and no real atmosphere. So we didn’t stay to eat at the hotel during our stay which was a shame as the menu sounded great. (On arriving during our first evening with our cases from taxi drop off, we walked into the restaurant rather than walking in round the side and were asked to go back out and around the side- not rudely but still not very inviting. )

Cleaning starts quite early at the hippocampus, usually some noise/ cleaning from about 6.30am - 7am but although it woke me up it didn’t bother us. 

All that being said we did have a lovely holiday and would advocate going for a restful and pleasant holiday again. I was just a little disappointed at the reviews saying how great the service was, how inclusive everything was, and how it really felt like going home, a real friendly family feel, as I didn’t feel that. I can only think that some of these reviews are written by regular customers to the hotel who have been going year after year.

my wife and i stayed here for 11 nights from 13th september.it was our 3rd visit and as good as the previous 2.george the manager will book you trips if you want but doesnt pressure you into anything.costa and his son christof make breakfast a great start to the day.the 2 guys on in the evening with costa served us lovely food from the chef who always gave you a warm welcome when we saw him.finally the maid kept the rooms spotless with a smile every morning.
pop to philips bar for a beer and snack only minutes away and a quiet pebble beach is nearby.

The Hippocampus is a lovely modern hotel. - our room was comfortable with modern facilities and was kept spotless by the cleaner who came 6 days a week. We didn’t need air on but it’s available if you do. The hotel staff are all very helpful and friendly. George at reception is a wealth of knowledge and will do everything he can to help you. Bar and restaurant staff are great fun too. We used the pool bar at. Elons for our days relaxing. - again very clean and modern with a lovely relaxed atmosphere (no children allowed in the pool) and with access to the beach. It’s quite windy here so sea can be choppy but was warm. Caught local bus to Rhodes town - loads to see and lovely day out. Also boat trip to Ixia - again very relaxing and lovely day out.
