I've stayed at the Sleepy Hippo around 4 or 5 times this year. Travelling with work this was an affordable option, although I did not expect the wonderful hospitality and friendliness from owners Richard and Emmanuel.
They're cool and laid back guys who will give advice and accomodate. The food options are limited but nice, the breakfast is a great start. The rooms have fans and ac, hot showers on request, super comfy beds and are always clean. 
The place is central to get around Accra with a short walk to Osu where there are shops and restaurants, a cheap taxi to the tourist sites.
I recommend this stay for anyone who wants to feel safe, welcome and a no fuss option with the basic comforts. 

A home away from home 

For my holidays, I decided to visit Ghana: Accra, Cape Cost and Tamale. Thus, I had to do a lot of back and forth and up and down with Accra as my main focal point. Thankfully, the hotel allowed me to make my booking as I wish. For budget travelers, I recommend their dormitory:  it is cheap, nice and clean. Their location is also not that bad. A few of their downsides are: you always have to remember the staff when you need a pick up or drop off from or to the airport (if not, they will forget you); their restaurant is good but they don't serve local food (which is cheaper); besides, their internet only works best when you're at the ground floor level (the more you climb a floor, the less Wifi works). Overall, I had a good time there.

Touring across Ghana

We recently flew into Accra on our way to volunteer for a charity in north Ghana. We had many boxes with us so Richard met us at the airport with 2 taxis which was great as otherwise we wouldn't have known which taxi drivers to trust (if Richard helps you, don't give money to anyone else as he will sort it all out). Richard then let us store our boxes in his office while we spent the day in Accra.

Then on our way back from the north of Ghana, our bus arrived at Accra bus station at 5am. We called the Sleepy Hippo and they spoke to a taxi driver at the bus station for us and negotiated a price and gave them directions. We were really grateful for this. 

The rooms are pleasant and you meet other interesting travellers.

Very friendly and helpful with transport

Lovely staff, clean and comfortable accommodation and good food for a reasonable price. What more could you want? :)

(Plus the roof terrace and the plunge pool are also pretty awesome, especially in the evening

Cheap and Cheerful :)

We stayed in three different rooms in the Sleepy Hippo. All of them were clean with comfortable beds and the dorm rooms are great value for money with a great breakfast included. Richard and Emmanuel were very hospitable and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. 

Lovely accommodation and host

Stayed here twice recently. I don’t get the great reviews as I thought this place was fine but not great. Quiet location but you need a taxi to get anywhere. Private rooms are a good price compared to Accra hotels but you don’t get much for your money either. No towel or top sheet, few things didn’t work in my room first time I stayed such as the a/c and no water one day, the rooftop is only three chairs and a table, Wi-Fi didn’t work and they only had a mobile internet in the reception area which was often out of credit both times I stayed. Airport pick didn’t arrive though they confirmed the booking the night before. Not a lot was explained on check in and with some of the staff you just get the impression that you’re a bit of a nuisance. Kitchen staff were great though and good to have cold beer and food downstairs.
