One of the great things about travelling for planespotting is that you find yourself in places well off the beaten tourist path. You get to meet the locals and generally experience more of the country. This is what brought me to the Wattenschipper, and I must say it was good value for money. Situated right on top of its restaurant, which is well-frequented by locals (always a good sign), the rooms are comfortable, well sized and clean. One little word of warning for those visiting in the time of year close to the Summer solistice (May, June, July) - the sun rises at around 4:00 a.m and sunset is at around 22:30 - and the rooms donot have blackout curtains or blinds, hence if you're a light sleeper, your nights could be a bit short! Also, make sure you travel light, as negotiating the staircase with some bulky luggage would make for some rather interesting viewing! Otherwise didnt have any problems. The hosts speak mostly in German, so a phrasebook would be a good idea if you don't have a small working knowledge of the language. It was a great way to bruch up my German from my mis-spent schooldays, but this is to be expected, after all this is very budget accommodation in a small village in Germany! A word on the restaurant is also due. Being a village by the sea, the menu focusses mainly on fish, but they also have a selection of meat dishes. Definitely go for the Krabbensuppe - a cream of prawn soup which comes highly recommended by yours truly and all my travelling companions. The portions are abundant, and the prices reasonable. A good two-course meal and a beer cost us less than EUR 25 per person. The restaurant is closed on Monday, but our host recommended a restaurant called Deichrestaurant Peters, which was down the road. He was helpful enough to call to make us a reservation and a personal recommendation with Peter, the owner of the restaurant, and I can assure you that we were treated very well. Breakfest is served next door to the Wattenschipper, at the next hotel, which seems to also belong to the same owner. It's a continental buffet, with loads of cheeses, cold meats, eggs, salads and (as one would expect) fish. The bread was oven fresh, still hot, and we definitely refuelled ourselves well for a day's planespotting, to the point that we did not really feel hungry till dinner time. Parking on site was good and secure, very close to the hotel's entrance and within view of most of the hotel rooms. So, all in all, highly recommended for a nice break in a nice quiet village - big thumbs up!
