Pension / Ferienwohnungen Scheid

We often stay in Kestert when we are visiting the Rhine Valley but our usual hotel was fully-booked over the bank holiday weekend, and we were very fortunate to find a room at this little gem, where a friendly welcome awaited us. When I say "a room" I am understating, because when we arrived, we discovered that we had been given a holiday apartment in the house nextdoor, and I cannot say enough good about it. It was far more space than we needed for a one night stopover, but everything was perfect. The apartment has a decent-sized double room in which there is an extra fold-out bed big enough for one, a modern well-equipped kitchen-diner, and a bang up-to-date bathroom. If more of you are travelling together, there is also a small living-room that overlooks the river and in which there is a comfortable double sofa-bed. From the moment we entered the apartment, we knew that the owners had paid a lot of attention to detail, from the fixtures and fittings to the decor. As for the bed, it is incredibly comfortable and fitted with good quality bedding, making for a good night's sleep. We did get chance to look at rooms in the main building, and they too are well-equipped, two of them with a balcony. Breakfast was in the main building and was more than ample, with a good selection of meat, cheese, yoghurt, jams and boiled eggs - and of course the German bread rolls. Frau Dorn is very helpful and obviously cares for the well-being of her guests, in what is a family business that has been handed down. A couple of notes: First of all, this is a pension and holiday apartments type of accommodation, so it does not have a restaurant. However, just a short walk and you are at Hotel Goldener Stern where, in my opinion, you will be served some of the best food on the Rhine. Secondly, on the map it looks as if Kestert is away from the "action" but it is well-served by trains, with the station just a few steps away.
