3 reviewsThis was a truely wonderful find - a lovely little self-catering apartment in a traditional house on a very quiet street, just a few minutes walk from the village centre at Kochel-Am-See. It's spacious, comfortable, beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean, well equiped and in a charming location. We really enjoyed our stay here and would love to return. The check-in process was extremely easy and available until late at night (10pm) - I collected the keys from the reception of the Alpenhof Postillion hotel who were very helpful, spoke excellent English and had all the paperwork sorted out already. They offered guests at Villa Waldfrieden use of the pool at the hotel, as well as the other facilities of the hotel. We had a very pleasant breakfast there on our first morning before we had bought our own supplies. The apartment itself is easy to find, just follow the road running along the side of the Alpenhof Postillion, keeping left whenever the road forks. The Villa Waldfrieden is on the right two houses after the Police station. Set in a nicely kept garden, the four apartments in the main house share a porch with guidebooks, chairs and a chest. Due to the thick stone walls, this is also the place with the best WiFi reception on the property. There are car parking spaces, two of which are under a car port, for which you have to pay a little extra. Once you enter the apartment the main room has a superking size double bed with two independant mattresses, a sofabed which is actually pretty comfortable as a sofa, and a coffee table. There's a large wardrobe in the corner by the door, and a wooden sideboard equiped with a very nice modern large screen TV with a wide range of channels including Sky News in English. In the corner near the bathroom was some kind of central heating covered in light green tiles - a little incongurous but probably a traditional Bavarian design. Moving on to the kitchen, there was a very well equiped kitchen with electric hob, kettle, toaster, coffee maker and a reasonably large fridge. There was also a nice kitchen table with seating for four. The cultery was plentiful, and there was a good selection of plates, glasses and cooking utensils. Off the kitchen is the bathroom, which while fairly narrow had a pleasant white tiled wet room feel through out. There was a quick to warm up, stable and very adjustable shower in the shower cubicle in the corner. There was no bath tub per se, but the base of the shower tray could be filled to 20cm or so deep for washing feet or a baby. The kitchen also had a nice patio door leading to a patio with garden table with four chairs - a table cloth and seat cushions were available in one of the drawers of the wardrobe. The mountains were just visible through the trees behind the house, but mostly you look out on the garden and the other traditional houses. The village of Kochel itself was a real treasure too. It has a small number of hotels offering reasonably priced meals to non-residents. Just a short walk through the church yard led us to the Lake itself which is very beautiful and a haven for swimmers and windsurfers in the summer. Also in the heart of the village is the very attractive railway station - the end of the line and for good reason because the alps rise straight up to the south of the lake. This has approximately hourly rail services into Munich - the two of us were able to get a day pass for 23 Euro allowing unlimited travel after 9am to Munich and other stations along the way (such as Starnberg for Starnberger See. There appear to be two Supermarkets in town; the Penny Markt which is directly behind the railway station, half hidden by a wood yard. Easiest way to reach it is to walk round the end of the railway tracks. The other is an E-Aktiv which is just at the start of the village on the North side, just beyond the station.
