Altstadt Hotel Athos

Location was great - handy for shops, bars, restaurants and for local transport. The room was quiet and of a good size. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. 
The good range of breakfast food enabled us to spend a full day sightseeing without needing to stop for more food.
We didn't take up the opportunity to take dinner at the hotel but on both nights the tables were pretty full and diners seemed to be enjoying themselves.

We only had one night here, and despite the photos on the webpages and some reviews, the room was spacious, windows to a small street (with quite a lot of traffic during the night!), good beds and a nice bathroom. Taking into account that this is a 3stars hotel, everything was just as expected - and with a good price. The hotel is really in the old centre, so everything was close. I`d recommend this Place!

I thoroughly recommend this hotel. It looks unpromising from the outside, but the interior is very clean, and the marble staircases and quality fittings make a good impression. The value is superb - 48 euros including breakfast. But it's the friendliness of the staff that really raises this place above the average.

This is not only a hotel but a Greek restaurant. You get a complimentary glass of ouzo when you dine there, and everyone from the proprietor downwards makes a real effort to ensure you feel comfortable. I had intended to only stay one night, but lingered for a second night because the whole experience was so enjoyable.

Gotha is a good centre for exploring the Germany of J.S. Bach. If you can, get the bus to Schmalkalden - it's a lovely trip through the Thuringian forest, and the little town is really beautiful.

Great spot in Gotha

Decent price, ok overall

Excellent budget hotel with friendly staff

The staff here were lovely, but for non-smokers in particular the place was not outstanding.  The restaurant provides solid German/Greek food in huge serves and standard German breakfast buffets.  The room we had was a good size.  It was adequately fited for the price, and the pigeons on the roof of the derelict house opposite provided endless entertainment.  The location was great - within a few metres of the town square.  The desk person was helpful, giving us clear directions to the parking around the corner.  Unfortunately, we had not asked for a non-smoking room.  I am not sure that this would have mattered, as the corridors and stairwell smelt so strongly of tobacco.  Also, there was some traffic noise.  So, sorry to say, other choices may be better for non-smokers.  In fairness, the problem may be a common one in East Germany, where anti-smoking policies seem not to have had much effect.
