Small but adequate clean rooms. Lots of historic feeling. No breakfast. Good options outside. In the middle of the town.  A small stream with trouts runs along. Good terras for beer and diner. Good staff

Location 

If you are a fan of old hotels this is for you, but if you like all modern comforts then it's not.
Located at the center of the old town it's a bit difficult to know where to drop the luggage as the hotel is located in a restricted area and on a one way street. What I did was to stop right in front of the hotel, went inside and asked what to do. Luckily it was a bit off season, so had no problems with the traffic and was able to drop my luggage and drive to the parking that was advised by the hotel staff. If you are "mature" like me then it will be a problem to get up the steep and narrow staircase carrying the luggage unless the staff give some help. Apart from all this it was a different place to spend a night and that was the reason why I chosen this hotel. The beds were comfortable and the facilities ok if a bit out of time.
Cannot offer my opinion on breakfast as I didn't have any as we departed very early in the morning before the chef arrived.

Going back in time.

First, let me say that the appeal of Monschau, Germany is its centuries-old, charming look and feel. We didn’t expect any of the hotels in this quaint little town to be modern, sleek, or luxurious, but we did expect them to offer the basics — clean rooms, courteous service, and safe conditions. Zum Stern provided none of the above.  To start, it was dark and rainy when we arrived in Monschau, and the Zum Stern was nearly impossible to find along the narrow cobblestone streets. When we finally pulled up front and went inside, we found who we assumed to be the manager in the bar (there is no front desk).  He was extremely unfriendly and unhelpful in explaining the logistics of check-in.  The hotel is cash only (!!!) but this man couldn’t even tell us where we could find an automated bank machine in the town.  He actually said “there are plenty of them; if you walk through the town you’ll eventually come across one.”  Exactly what we wanted to do on a rainy night in a strange town. When we finally got up up to our room, it took us a good 5 minutes to unlock the door because the door frame was crooked and the door didn’t fit in it very well. When we finally did unlock the door, we couldn’t believe our eyes.  It was like looking in a funhouse mirror; the room literally tilted towards the outside wall, to the point where it was hard to walk across the floor. The furniture was old, worn, and mismatched.  There was no phone. The TV did not work.  There was a jagged, loose tile sticking up from the bathroom floor in front of the toilet.  The door (which had been so hard to open) only locked from the inside with the key, so we had to spend another 5 minues trying to lock ourselves in! We both commented that in case of a fire we’d have no hope of getting out of the room quickly. I could go on, but I don’t think it’s necessary.  The bottom line is, “quaint” and “charming” doesn’t have to mean “unsafe” and “falling apart.” Between the appalling conditions of the room and the rudeness of the manager, we could not wait to check out in the morning. Horrible experience.

Don’t Do It

A absent waiter, not unfriendly but not interested at all. Basic menu. Forel was ok. Clean toilets. A limit of drinks available. We first ordered with the menu of the neighbour restaurant. Pay attention.

They don't accept credit card! How bad to see something like this in 2016 in Germany!!
We were there 1 night for work for work, and we had to put together all the cash we had as it was not enough... The hotel is very typical.
