Hotel & Restaurant Zur Glocke

I had chosen Höchstädt and the Hotel and Restaurant zur Glocke because it was in a convenient place to break a long journey. Well, if I'd known how lovely the area was, how much there is to see and how wonderful the hotel and restaurant zur Glocke was, I'd have stayed longer than two nights. Firstly, Höchstädt is a delightful little town on the Danube, with the most astonishing castle, like something out of medieval fairy tales. Dillingen, a larger town about five miles away, is delightful and has a rococo church with an interior to match the Wieskirche, and there are several more nearby. The hotel is what one might call a restaurant with rooms, as the restaurant is the main draw, but the rooms are bright, modern, comfortable and spotless. Breakfast is one of the best you will get anywhere, with the most wonderful home-made preserves and excellent coffee. Do not stay here without eating in the restaurant. Herr Stoiber is a genius. Although we were just having a main course, we were brought a little appetizer of a creamed potato nest in which sat some pumpkin ice cream, which was delicious. Then my wife had local trout fillets wrapped in an egg and Parmesan coat and I had loin of pork served with a little bundle of green beans wrapped in a crisp pancake. Some of the best food we have ever eaten. Food and accommodation are outstanding and, together with this lovely but not widely known area, are certainly enough to recommend a visit of a few days.
