Landhotel Sonneneck

For a one-night stopover in the vicinity of the city Kassel I was looking on the Internet and found this hotel Sonneneck. I couldn’t find any reviews about the hotel, so I didn’t book in advance. Just before departure I could see on the Internet that there were rooms available (early May 2007). The hotel is located off highway A44 from Dortmund to Kassel in the rural village of Breuna. From the highway it is a 5-minute drive to Breuna, Sonneneck is the only hotel, after you pass a supermarket you have to make a left turn at the second or third street. (If you come from the other side you will see a direction sign to this hotel.) When we arrived I walked to the restaurant entrance, finding it closed, I knocked at the door and a woman (she is one of the couple that owns this place) opened the door and said that the restaurant was closed until 6 p.m. (I used the wrong entrance, round the corner is the hotel entrance with a door bell.) But the hotel was open and she showed me the luxury room. There are also standard rooms and a suite. In advance we optioned for the suite, but the luxury room had a very nice terrace and the suite not, so we took this room (have not seen the suite). It was lovely sunny weather; with the terrace (with both chairs and sun beds) we could sit outside in the afternoon. The room was good, had enough space, there is a working desk with chair and mini fridge and a nice setting with two armchairs and table. The bathroom was clean and had only a shower. There are no coffee/tea facilities, but when I travel in Europe I always bring my own water cooker, cups and coffee and tea. The small details made this a very pleasant stay. When we walked in with our suitcases, the owner immediately took them upstairs for us (there is no elevator). In the short absence to get our luggage his wife had placed a sign with welcome and bonbons on it and also some fruit on a tray. In the evening we had the 4-course menu in the restaurant and that was fantastic! The owner is a very good cook, everything was homemade, not only the food tasted delicious but every course was also nice made up. This menu cost less than 20 euros per person. The wine list is very extensive; we took a tasteful Spanish rioja. In the room we noticed that walls are thin, we could hear the television of our neighbors. But it ended, luckily, on time. Breakfast is buffet, not too many choices, but everything of top quality, for instance the yoghurt tasted gorgeous, must be made locally. So our stay was very comfortable, we would like to return here, but for just the food it is also worth to leave the highway.
