It's probably been closed all summer because of "Corona" so it's no longer as bad as the previous reviewers say. The doors still squeak and sound loud when they close, it's still an "older"building so has all the quirks of older buildings, stairs everywhere, wooden floors that do make sounds when you walk on them in normal shoes, that sort of thing. They now have better housekeeping, they now have cookware in the kitchen, they now clean the refrigerator on a regular basis and throw out anything that is starting to stink, that sort of thing. Housekeeping cleans every day even if there is still someone in the room, sort of thing. At this time the place seems to be minus a whole lot of people sleeping in the living-area instead of in their rooms, but there are still a few, it is a hostel, after all. There will always be men like that in hostels. 

At least they speak ENGLISH at the front desk and we were greeted in English when we walked in which is a FIRST for Berlin. In the 9 months we've been stuck here this is the first time that's happened. Everyone else seems to think we look "German" or German speaking or something? WTH, we're Irish! Signage posted in the hostel are in English as well as German and something that looks like Polish or Bulgarian or something, can't tell. Maybe housekeeping is from one of those countries and can read that, whatever. The signage at the front desk about how to get around neglects one thing about the TXL Airport bus, though, it's also accessible if you cross the street and take the #245 to the stop at Turmstrasse Tube station and then switch to the TXL Airport bus there (that bus only makes like 4 stops between the Hauptbahnhof and the Airport). But that's the sort of thing you'll only know if you've been stuck in Berlin way too long and have had reason to go from the Hauptbahnhof out to TXL over and over and over again. Most normal people wouldn't know a thing like that. Also that the only supermarket open on a Sunday in the general vicinity is the Rewe at the Hauptbahnhof. Next closest one is Edeka at Friedrichstrasse bahnhof. 

I can't see how people paid €40 but if they did then no wonder they were complaining. For €10 a night it's probably as good as it's going to get, in Germany.

It's OK for the price

My friends and I stayed at the happy hostel for 4 nights. One night a drunk man entered our room while we were sleeping. He sat down on my bed and tried to get in. When the reception was informed of this they told us it was our fault

Horrible

I stayed here for 4 weeks while taking part in a EBS bartending school that decided this would be their partnering accommodation. 

-This hostel has absolutely no safety as the rooms can be accessed from the street by simply pressing 1 button that unlocks the main door and the separate doors to each floor are always left unlocked.

-The kitchen is hopeless. No oven. Things stolen from the fridge. Everyone in the hostel seems to pester you when you are minding your own business trying to make food.

- Had issues with people pissing in bathroom sinks, smoking in the hallways and in the showers, bashing on doors, doing grafitti in the stair wells. When we told the guy at the reception, he couldnt have cared less.

- Someone on the second floor was stabbed in the shower. Yep you read that right. There was about 50 police and ambulance scattered throughout the hostel. Friends on the second floor rooms were forced to stay in their rooms and said they could smell blood throughout. After it all happened there was no information given by the hostel about our safety.
A few days after we were told to go to our room and lock the door as someone was walking around with a knife.

- Crazy people entered our rooms during the night literally screaming at us. Another entered at 3am yelling that he couldnt find his bed and wanted help.

Honestly the list goes on. I have stayed in many hostels around Berlin and only stayed here due to trusting EBS's recommendation which was a huge mistake. Your money is better used literally anywhere else.

Unsafe insane asylum. Please do not stay here.

Absolutely not recommended, under no circumstances. 
I stayed in this hostel for three nights with a group of friends. At first everything seemed acceptable, even though the shared bathrooms were totally dirty, as if they got cleaned once a month. 
On our second night however real problems began. We found a mouse in the walls of our bedroom, we heard it squeaking and scratching on the inside of the wall. We were of course freaked out and didn’t know how to solve the problem so we went to the receptionist to ask for help. The guy told us he didn’t know what to do and that he hoped the mouse would simply disappear... We kept insisting that he should help us somehow, considering that it was the hostel’s responsibility if something like this happened. He answered that it was our fault that the mouse got inside because we had opened the window (which we didn’t do) and told us that it didn’t seem like a big deal to him. The staff is therefore rude and completely incapable of running a hostel, let alone solving problems. In fact the “mouse problem” was not solved, they just moved me and my friends in another room and put other guests who had just arrived in our previous room, the one with the mouse, without informing them about the situation. 
Moreover the hostel is not safe enough, especially for women, since there were guys who didn’t behave properly at all.
We had other tiny problems with the shared kitchen since we left our beverages in the fridge and we later found out that other guests had drunk them, even though we had written our names and room number on it as the rules of the shared kitchen said. 
In addition to all of this, even though the hostel was fully booked (as the staff told us), we found out that many people were sleeping the entire night in armchairs in the common area, which is totally forbidden and not fair both for them and the other guests.
Lastly, the pictures shown in the profile of the hostel on this site are not accurate. I believe that the picture of the reception is just old, but the picture of the kitchen is completely different from how it actually is.
100% not recommended, even more if we consider that it cost us 40€ each per night.

Mouse in the room and so much more

I was very surprised to read other reviews on here after a brilliant stay at the Happy Hostel (to the point of wondering whether this is actually the same place...!). This was a cheap and cheerful hostel in a brilliant location- just 20 mins walk from the centre, with brilliant public transport connections (S-bahn, U-bahn, buses). There is also a really handy bus connection to Tegel Airport from very nearby. As well as the location, there was little not to like about the rest of the hostel. The rooms struck me as very clean and tidy, and the whole decor about the place was very cheerful and inviting- lots of quirky touches and colours! The fact that there was a bathroom in each room was very handy, and they were always kept clean. The beds were perhaps a little creaky, but very comfortable for the price. The main "perk" was the abundant plug sockets in each room, a lack of which is a common problem with hostels! The wifi also worked brilliantly. The staff were absolutely lovely; so friendly and helpful, and always available when you needed them (even at 6am when i had to check out!). It felt like a very safe and comfortable place to be. I had a wonderful stay here and I'll definitely back! Such good value for money, and I would highly recommend (especially to fellow solo travellers!)

Surprisingly Wonderful!

A solo night after a great trip to Belgium, change of scenery! A room of 8 very austere, the bedding is correct from a comfort point of view but the beds and mattresses springs crinkle continuously. The snoring is added (independent of the establishment) and the conditions for resting are not good at all.
The decoration is non-existent which gives the impression of being in a Catholic boarding school of the 50s.
The sanitary cleanliness is to be reviewed.

To conclude: I slept better on the train of the following morning!
