We had booked two nights in Gerardmer but left as over run with tourists and a carnival. Found l"Eau Vive and it was perfect. A short walk from a lovely lake and surrounded by thickly wooded hills of the Vosges. Our room was spacious and quiet. We had lunch, dinner and breakfast there and the first two were very nice. Breakfast, as usual in France, was rather skimpy. Nice wine and drinks and the owners were helpful although I had to use my French to communicate. We wished we had spent more time there.

Nice Setting

It is a basic hotel and it wasn't very warm at night. The heat was low and couldn't be turned up. Luckily, I packed my super warm pajamas. There also seemed to be some problems with the plumbing. 

The breakfast consisted of refrigerator-cold croissants and cold bread with marmalade and butter as well as coffee with milk and orange juice. The bread was good and tasted fresh, but the croissant was cold and hard. There is no elevator, so keep it in mind when you are packing. We didn't expect much, but we would have liked to at least have a fresh croissant and decent heating.

The best part about this hotel is its vicinity to La Bresse-Hohneck ski slopes. It is about 8 minutes away. This is the only reason we chose this hotel. There is no luxury whatsoever here, but if you're going skiing, you know that every minute counts as a lost parking space in La Bresse, so it's nice to be able to drive there in under 10 minutes. So if you skip breakfast and dress warmly at night and perhaps even bring a better pillow you will be fine and not pay a lot for it.

We knew it would be basic, we just didn't know how basic it would be. But it was fine. All we really wanted was to be close to the slopes and that's exactly what it was.
