Auberge Le Petit Haut

We usually reserve our stop-overs when we drive long-distance, but on this occasion we left it to chance. Little did we know that the Alsace region was hosting a European patchwork convention., Having left Tuscany in the morning, we crossed Switzerland and finally reached the Alsace in the evening. At every hotel/inn we were told the same: there were no rooms available, and we would be lucky to find a room unless we went to Strasbourg. Being September, it gets dark early, and as 10pm approached we resigned ourselves to a night in the car. Then, as we came to a hairpin descent we saw the lights of a hotel, and, oh joy, they had a room. It was a simple room with a sloping roof and a skylight, but clean, plenty of storage space. The ensuite was fine except that the holder for the showerhead had proken so you had to hold the showerhead all the time it was on. We slept very well. The breakfast buffet was generous, which, as we had arrived after the restaurant had closed, was somewhat welcome. (We had, however, been able to order coffee when we arrived, and we had rations with us). Morning showed the hotel in a beautul location on the tree-covered Col between Ribeauville and Ste Marie des Mines. Bill was extremely reasonable. Very good value for the Alsace.
