Hotel Restaurant La Hoguette Saint-Malo 200m de la mer

We pass through St Malo five or six times a year and have noticed the inflating of prices for no added value in the touristy intra muros so decided on an out-of-town night before the ferry. La Hoguette is a good no frills hotel with bar and restaurant and exceptionally welcoming, able and cheerful, mainly young, staff. We booked it because the restaurant actually opened on Mondays with generally good reviews. On arrival at 3.30pm we found it closed (which we would have known had we bothered to read the small print) but it wasn't a problem as there's an excellent bar tabac across the road and a spectacular patisserie with a coffee shop at the back. We got our room at 5.30pm - a comfort double on the first floor (beware steep stairs if infirm) which had recently been refurbished to a good standard and was good value at £50 in the height of the season. The new shutters were useful for keeping an air flow going through the night which was particularly warm and stuffy. The restaurant is unpretentious and varied from pizzas to seafood platters, all generous portions served by charming staff. A free drink of our choice was offered because we had booked the hotel & restaurant. A nice touch. It's a short walk to the expansive Sillon beach from where you can stroll along to the intra muros. Personally I wouldn't bother.
