When I came in Nice in December 2018, I stayed at  Hostel Smith. Oh my God, I have never seen such a dirty place! There were bedbugs! There were junkees in the hostel. And there was no water. Stairs were also very dangerous. 
I came back in Nice in September 2019 and the tourist office told me that this hostel was closed because it was illegal and dangerous.
Be careful guys!

Hostel Smith is in the most wonderful part in Nice based, the "Old Town". 
It's only 5 minutes away from the beautiful beach. And also just 5 minutes away from the main street, where you can find all the shopping stores and more.
The hostel atmosphere is very nice. You always have the opportunity to get to know new people. 
The personal is also super friendly. 

To sum it up, I really can recommand this hostel.

Super central and comfortable hostel !

Shared a room with 12 people one night and then was upped to 15 and 17 the following nights when there was only space for 12 people. No toilet paper and only 2 showers for approx. 30 people. Disgusting level of cleanliness. Women screaming on street all night. Would not recommend. 

Interesting stay

They didn't bring the sheets in from outside before it rained, so they gave us wet sheets to sleep on. We left after that night and went to a different hostel. Not worth it. The location caught my eye, but there are much better places to stay. Like the beach.

I have stayed at Hostel Smith more than once this year as I truly love Nice! 

Where to start? The location is fantastic,it's a 7 minute walk to the sea and in the heart of the Old Town, close to everything you may need. 

During the summer it is such a bubbly place with plenty to see,do and eat. In the lower season it is a perfect get away to relax and wind down surrounded by all things beautiful and charming.

Hostel Smith has really affordable prices and one must be mindful of that as you do get what you pay for. 

As a solo female traveller, 
I loved my stay as the staff was very friendly and was able to recommend lots of cool things to see and do. 

The hostel has an amazing terrace, perfect for meeting new people from all walks of life or just to relax during quiet moments. There is also a kitchen where you can store and cook your own food. This was very handy for me as I travel on a budget! I could not always afford to buy food out. 

All in all, I would recommend Hostel Smith, it is a very special place!

Cosy Hostel in dreamy Location!

This hostel is just the perfect place to stay at when in Nice. It’s located in the heart of the beautiful old town (still pretty easy to find) and you are at the beach within 5 minutes by foot. The staff is super nice and very helpful no matter what. Thanks to the common kitchen and terrace you’ll get in touch quickly with everyone. 
Totally recommend staying here!

Super nice in Nice !

Very difficult to find (I had to ask a shopkeeper in a nearby store), the doorway has the smallest sign. You buzz and are admitted, but have to walk up a dark stairwell until you find a door with the name on. Admittedly, the young female on 'reception' was friendly and chatty - no problems there. The room (mixed dorm for 6 in bunk beds); rickety metal bunks and dubious looking mattresses were squeezed in pretty tight, again not a real problem but nowhere to store larger bags/rucksacks. There were lockers but tiny and no mention of a key. There were signs all over the place telling you not to leave valuables unattended - good advice of course but didn't inspire me!. On return to the hostel after dark, (different female on duty) allowed us entry, having no idea who we were and then had to fumble around for some time in the dark corridor (light bulb had blown she said) trying to find the key to our sleeping area (I suppose the fact that it was locked was a good thing but she didn't ask who we were anyway)! 
It is in 'Old Town' so it was noisy but only until midnight-ish so I don't really fall out with that.
Showers (x 2) - mixed (fine) but no locks or anywhere to hang towels/clothing
Toilets (x 2) - one of which wasn't working.
Exploration the following morning (no staff around), revealed extra 'living areas' one of which was the kitchen. Someone had deposited their trainers and dirty socks here, there were unwashed utensils strewn around, drawers/doors open and food items over the floor. Un-emptied ashtrays up on the rooftop area, which could've been a very nice area. It wasn't. More cigarette butts in the window box area, dirty cushions and seating and generally un-cared for and grubby.
Great location, right in the Old Town area, but really needed someone to clean it up and sort it out. 
Cheap? yes - for a reason I guess.

Don't bother!

You get what you pay for. That is the lesson of the day.

My mates and I booked into this hostel as we had just walked the GR5 through the Alps. The hostel is absolutely filthy. Blocked toilets, grime everywhere, showers with no locks. Signs everywhere warning you about thefts yet not enough lockers for everyone.

Beds were loose and bolts need tightening. Sagging bed frames and filthy mattresses. 

There is no free coffee as advertised on the website, besides even if there was I'd have avoided using any utensils here.

Staff are very young and appear oblivious to the squalor around them.

I stayed for one night in Hostel Smith Beach, I have to say that before arriving I was a bit scared because of the very mixed reviews. But I was pleasantly surprised. The hostel was clean and the staff nice. I stayed in the large dorm. The thing that should be improved is the lockers. With all the warning signs hanging to not leave valuables unattended, there should be a working locker for everyone. If the locks break to often then make everyone bring their own locks as it is done in most other hostels. 
The things that could be improved are the very thin mattress and the sagging bedframe that made it a bit uncomfortable to sleep for more than one night. 
But for its price a totally good hostel.

Basic Hostel

Me and my friend were booked into this hostel for 3 nights. 
After struggling for an hour to find the hostel we had to ring them. Turns out the door is an old metal door on a quiet street with a tiny sign. Not obvious at all and google maps didn’t even help! 
After opening the door we were shocked at what we found, we were inside a horror movie. Pitch black hallway with scary stairs and doors. We apprehensively walked up the stairs to find a small reception. 

Although the man at reception was friendly this didn’t make up for the awful condition of this hostel. 
Very old, dirty rooms and no air con so the large windows have to be open 24/7 which means it is very loud! 

There are no locks on any of the doors to the hostel and so it feels very unsafe. We had to pay €20 deposit for a rubbish small locker. 
The mattresses were very thin and uncomfortable and were weren’t given any pillow cases. 

As if this wasn’t bad enough. On our final night we saw a mouse running around the bedrooms. Out of horror we went to tell the girl on reception. She didn’t seem bothered and said she would ring the manager but no one came down and nothing was done. Disgusting! 
There were also many bugs and probably cockroaches too. 

You have to share a small dirty toilet with atleast 10 people with only 2 showers which are practically see through with no locks. There is no WiFi in the bedroom and minimal plugs. We were unable to charge our phones during the night as there was only 2 plugs in the whole room. 

The only one good thing I can possibly write about this hostel is that it is close to the old town/ beach. We spent as much time out of the hostel as possible. 

Just stay away and spend your money elsewhere!! 
No idea how we spent 3 nights at this place.
