Chateau de Chappe

Our stay at Chateau de Chappe was so exceptional, it's hard to know where to begin. For context, let me start with the fact that my wife and I regularly stay at B&Bs and similar types of establishments across the globe, including other chateaus in France. Chateau de Chappe is incredible for its history, beauty, decor, onsite amenities, and most importantly, impeccable food and service from the owner and host Catherine. The 16th century bedrooms and common rooms and decor will surely make you feel like king or queen for a day, but with modern conveniences. We stayed in the Suite du Chevalier Guérin, which is enormous. It has a sitting room and a bedroom, both with fireplaces and very high timbered ceilings. Amenities on the large estate include a beautiful pool with its own poolhouse, kitchen, grill, bathroom, shower, and dining area, all of which are at complete disposal of the guests. Chappe also has electric bikes for guest use. The area itself is very quite, except for the sounds of birds and the resident geese, so it is perfect for decompressing while being 20-30 minutes from key sites in the Loire Valley. Catherine herself, however, is the real reason to stay here. The moment you arrive you feel as though you've known her your whole life: you are greeted and treated as an old family friend returning for a visit rather than just another guest. Without being invasive she will always make sure you have what you need, from the best breakfast in France (10 jams homemade by her; fresh figs and raspberries from her garden; eggs cooked your way; numerous fresh breads and pastries; fresh OJ) to her own homemade pate and ratatouille for a picnic to bottles of wine for whatever occasion - all on the house.
