Lodge at The Ancient City

Extremely spacious and comfortable room in a lovely setting. Very friendly, helpful staff. Not many guests but slightly off-season. Would warmly recommend this place as a comfortable option at Great Zimbabwe full of character. Slightly over-priced food, but worth it for the quality of setting, staff and facilities.

A very nice place where to stay for enjoying both Great Zimbabwe National Monument and Lake Mutirikvi (bikes free on request). Staff is efficient and helpful, premises and individual lodges are great, clean and comfortable. Food is tasteful and the swimming pool provides a nice view on the surroundings

I stayed for one night only on my way to the Zimbabwe  monument.
Great ambience. Large rooms with authentic African decor. 
Clean and cozy.
Great food, large portions.
Our party had to leave by 3:00am and the staff had packed breakfast ready for us!

This place has a unique setting and design for every room. Every detail considered. Bar and restaurant area are dramatic and superb. It is half an hours drive from Mavingo but hotel were happy ton organise car and driver to help us throughout our stay.

This was my second stay at The Lodge at The Ancient City - I returned because I found the location and facilities spectacular.  Service was friendly and food was also tremendous this time - as a vegetarian, my preferences were taken care of.I will return again and highly recommend this wonderful lodge!

Loved everything about the property especially when it rained

We were a self-guided group of five and based here for two nights to tour Great Zimbabwe, visit surrounding villages and see Lake Kyle.  The stay was excellent -- staff were helpful and friendly.  The architecture alone makes it worth a visit.  Rooms were very clean and very spacious, and the food and drink were good and reasonably priced.  Like much of Zimbabwe these days (early 2020), there is only electricity in the grid in the evenings, so the hotel is on generator power at other times.  There are some points during the day when there is no power in the rooms, but we were out at those times so didn't really notice.  Two Zimbabwe residents in our party had been to the Lodge before and said that it has definitely upped its game in the restaurant since their last visit a year or so ago.

Beautiful hotel in lovely setting.

This lodge is amazing. If you were to build a castle in Africa, it would be like this. This establishment is on the scale of European castles but in an African style - made to mimic the nearby Great Zimbabwe ruins. The architecture is impressive with its high ceilings and everything on a grand scale, with many stone walls built among the boulders that are characteristic for this part of the country. Even the individual rooms are palatial in size.We chose to eat dinner at the lodge's restaurant on the night we stayed there. It was a bit pricey but in line with what you would pay at a higher-end lodge like this. However, the atmosphere of the restaurant was a bit awkward. It was in a huge room, and our family wasn't sure if we should engage in conversation because the atmosphere felt like we had to be hushed. The service was excellent, but the wait staff hovered in the corner and watched us while we ate - kind of creepy and part of why we didn't want to talk much (we felt like they were listening to everything we said). The general manager greeting us a couple times and wanting to engage in conversation was a bit too much and added to the creepiness factor of the staff here.This place has great amenities and spaces - a swimming pool, indoor and outdoor bar areas for watching the sunset, seating areas inside and outside in the rooms. The only thing lacking seemed to be the choice of stations on the TV.

Very well maintained property. The rooms are exceptionally clean and so refreshing! Beautiful views, trees and relaxing atmosphere. However, the food was underwhelming. Not much variety on the menu. A little bit of planning from the chef and seasoning can transform their meals. The drinks and meals are overpriced.

Really great and unique setting, the rooms are very roomy and very clean. Staff extremely helpful and customer oriented. Decent meals too had dinner and breakfast in the dining room. Right next door to Great Zimbabwe but also feels like part of it due to the architecture. A fantastic place to holiday with the family and take friends especially from outside Zimbabwe. Can be cold though so take warm clothing

We based ourselves here for several days while on a small group tour.  What a treasure this hotel is!  Built right into the natural stone landscape and overlooking Great Zimbabwe across the valley, the rooms are individual rondavel huts beautifully appointed, very comfortable bed, with ensuite bath and shower room.  It wasn't sunbathing or pool weather but the facilities were excellent.  
Hotel staff went the extra mile to cater to our every need, whether for meals or with our accommodations.  Chimms, the manager, pullled out all the stops to find a way to send my favourite dress on to London which I'd inadvertently left behind.  Thank you Chimms!!  
I look forward to a return visit here with my family.

Above and beyond the call of duty

It is a nice and pleasant place to stay, particularly if you need somehow tranquil and peace of mind..you can breeze fresh air from forests around you! however, they need massive improvement for their breakfast....(or be realistic of what they charge, they charge 20 or 25 usd per person and this is somehow too way high), they have a very simple breakfast which doest nt cost one more than 8-10 usd.

Close to the Great Zimbabwe we found this marvellous state lodge in built of the African granite Outcrop surrounded by great msasa trees. Unique accommodation,view point, great lounge and restaurant. 
It was just like coming to the Great Zimbabwe itself.  If we have given friends Picture from the inside of the lodge and told them this was Great Zimbabwe, they would have believed us.
We had a half bord stay, which made it reasonable when it comes to price.  And a very pleasant crew helped us.
The room (cottage) could easily host a Family and had all what we wanted.
Next time when we bring guest for the ruins, this is the Place we will stay.
