Chez Mario et Solange

Spent two nights at this small B and B near the center of Montevideo that had great rooms with lots of style. The hosts Solange and her partner Julien were really nice and took the time to sit down  and talk about Uruguay. Solange’s father Mario is a real character full of life and stories. Our stay was great not only because of the place but the people were fantastic.

We stayed for 3 nights here and could happily have stayed longer! It's a lovely little hostel  - only 5 rooms (all private, no dorms) so quite cosy. We had the twin room, with beds pushed together to make it a double. All the rooms, and the whole hostel, are very stylish, with so many little retro touches. We particularly liked that lots of furniture was made from recycled crates, and there were even chairs made of tyres! Clearly a huge amount of thought and effort has gone into making the place so nice. 
Bathrooms are shared, but there was never any trouble using one when we were there (in low season) - 2 bathrooms between the 5 rooms. Very nice bathrooms too! It was great to have free shower gel, shampoo etc. There is a kitchen you can use to cook too. This was fine, the only thing was it could do with a bit more equipment, e.g. a chopping board. Solange and Julian were fantastic hosts, very friendly and it was great chatting to them at breakfast time every morning. Oh and amazing breakfast too, with fruit, cereal, yoghurt, really tasty seeded bread and all sorts of cakes and pastries. There is a roof terrace upstairs - it was too cold for this when we were there, but would be lovely in the summer. Great location - walking distance to centre and didn't feel dangerous at night, very close to a supermarket.
The only negative was that we had reserved a different room (double with balcony) but this turned out to be quite noisy from the street, so we moved to the twin one. Probably it'd be fine with ear plugs but maybe avoid the rooms on the street if you are sensitive to noise.
Overall really good - top place we stayed in Uruguay and one of the best in 15 months in South America!

I stayed here for five nights in March, as part of a holiday to Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. Julienne and Solange are delightful, very welcoming and helpful. The breakfast was a lovely beginning to the days spent in Montevideo and Punta del Este and I particularly liked the tasty bread, home made preserves and coffee. The hotel is decorated in a unique and interesting way and the rooms are comfortable. Thank you so much Julienne and Solange. I will be back!

The hotel is on a small side street and on arrival you do wonder if you have found the right place!

The hosts are so nice and friendly, offering lots of advice about Montevideo.

We had a very comfortable room and, though bathrooms are shared there was never and wait to get to use one. They provided shower gel, shampoos etc. 

Breakfast was great, with a mix of pastries and freshly squeezed juiced etc. 

The hotel is is a decent location, about a 20 min walk from the old part of the city.

There's not a huge amount to see in the city but worth getting a bicycle. The hosts can recommend a good place to hire a bike for a few hours which you can keep overnight.

Recommended.

We stayed at Chez Mario et Solange for three nights earlier this month and had a pleasant enough stay. 

The place is accessed off a dodgy looking side street, but you soon realise that this is perfectly safe. There is no sign on the door, just a buzzer and you go upstairs into the property. It is very well decorated, quite modern and quirky, with four rooms, two bathrooms, a small mezzanine kitchen and a living/dining room where breakfast is served. The room was fairly spacious and had everything we needed, with the exception of a heater which made the room slightly cold until you got into bed. The walls were fairly thin and you had the feeling that anything you said could be heard outside in the corridor, so there was the slight feeling of not really having too much privacy if that makes sense. The shower in the bathroom I used could also have been a bit better.

The location is good and it is only around a 15 minute walk to Plaza Indepencia and the old town. There are plenty of shops and a supermarket close by too. 

Wifi was very good, and finaly Mario and Solange were good, friendly hosts and spoke good English too which was a big help!
