Dolce Vita Hostel

Even though I stayed only a few days, I‘ve got to say that the hostel is one of the best choices I made in Montevideo. 
The facilities are clean and the eight bed mixed room comfortable with the possibility to save my stuff in a locked box under the bed (bring lock). The kitchen is free for use and there is plenty of space to chill (kitchen, reception room, downstairs TV-Lounge and the Billiard table and the terrace on the roof). I took the possibility to wash my clothes for a charge of 70. 
Tops: Staff and people. Best experience: Talking and music (guitar and percussion) in front of the hostel with staff and guests at nighttime. Tip: The hostel offers also bicycles.
Location: in walking distance to the city center – walking recommended. Amazing Uruguayan restaurant/bar next-door.

My boyfriend and I stayed three nights at this hostel and it was truly one of the best that we've stayed at during our 2-month South American journey. The first two nights we stayed in the private room which was really cute. The third night the room had been already booked so we decided to stay in the 4-bed dorm. Since Andres, the owner, knew we wanted a private room he gave us the 4-bed dorm for the same price as the private one!

The bathrooms were absolutely clean at all times and the kitchen was fine as well. We were able to cook dinner every night without a problem. The staff is also very helpful! 

What we liked most about this hostel besides the cleanliness is that it is not a party hostel yet you can still meet people. Oh, they also have a lounge area in the basement with a TV and pool table. 

We would definitely come back to this hostel! I'm surprised lonely planet does not mention it! 


The hostel is big and well located. It's architecture is charming and the dorms are very spacious. Pity they don't have windows. The bathrooms are not at the same level as the rest but everithing is very clean. The staff is really friendly and helpful: they will explain anything you need to know about montevideo.

Nights in front of the Hostel - what a feeling!

Good points:
Decent location, good wifi, helpful and friendly staff

Bad points:
Rooms smell musty
There isn't much of a common area. There are tables in the kitchen area and couple couches by the front desk, but most people sit outside the front of the building.
Beds are very small. I'm 6'3" but this is the first time I couldn't fit into a bed

Our stay at dolce vita wasn't bad. I think I would describe it all as very average. Average comfort in beds/pillows, average convenience in location (kind of right in the middle between the terminal and the old town), average breakfast, average cleanliness, average friendliness of staff... In short, nothing really stands out about this hostel, but it's fine for a quick stay in Montevideo. 

The one really big criticism I have is the kitchen's refrigerador. They tell you to label your stuff with your name and checkout date, but I have no idea why because that fridge didn't seem like it had been cleaned out in years!!! It was packed to the point of ridiculousness... it couldn't have possibly been completely filled with the items of current guests. Other than that, the kitchen was fine. 

I'm sure there are better hostels in Montevideo, but I'm also sure there are worse ones! That's about as good of a recommendation as I can give.
