This was not our first choice, but the last minute options in the popular Mikolajki can be limited. The images on the website of the 70's style communist-era slab of concrete may not look appealing. But charm and character can be found in unexpected places. The inside of the building is as you might expect when looking at the exterior. Long hallways, concrete stairs, nondescript artworks here and there and furniture from times long gone. In the lobby there's a little shopwindow with the lady selling crisps, candy and soda. The whole building feels like you're going back to high school. Except the food-lady is now more than happy to sell you a couple of beers as well. The rooms, small but adequate, look like they are furnished decades ago. Everything, from the blankets and chairs, to the railing on the balcony or the sink next to the door, is straight from the 70's. Yet it doesn't look old or worn out. The place is kept spotless and very well maintained. The only thing keeping us in modern time was the (flakey) wifi connection, but other than that it felt like stepping through a portal, back to simpler times. Times where hotel-theft was still prevented by a big, red stamp with the hotelname on the blankets. Besides loads of unexpected character, this place has a lot more going for it. Good value for money, boats and canoes for hire. An on-site restaurant (we didn't get to try it) and green surroundings perfect to escape the screamy touristparts on the other side of the lake. When visiting Mikolajki on a small budget, this place is definitely worth considering.
