San Pedro Lodge

I stayed here with my 11 year old son and we really enjoyed it. Olmes, Walter and the rest of the crew were amazing host. The lodge is small and so are the rooms but they were cute and comfortable. Each morning we saw Monkey's in the trees and could even hear the monkeys at night. If you're looking for luxury, this isn't it! The accommodations are clean and basic. The food however was anything but BASIC. The lodge provides breakfast, lunch and dinner. We were eating like kings and queens. We had fish, chicken, banana pancakes... omelettes it was great and all included in the price. 

Olmes arranged tours for us and provided a English speaking guide. If you prefer english, Olmes has a guide for you.  He even allowed me to customize one of the tour packages because we were pressed for time. I will recommend this lodge to anyone looking for a real jungle experience.

I stayed at San Pedro lodge after extending my work trip to Peru by two days to come to Iquitos.  I had done enough reading to know that you can't get an authentic primary jungle experience in just two days, but still wanted to get a feel for this part of Peru and feel like I had gotten a taste of the Amazon river basin.

San Pedro fit the bill perfectly.  I arranged with Oldest, my host, to be picked up at the airport and someone from the lodge was waiting for me when my planed landed.  They took me on a "tuk-tuk" or motorized taxi (an experience in itself) to a landing on the river where we continued by small boat down the Nanay river for 30 minutes to the lodge.

The trip was through relatively undisturbed secondary forest and was beautiful.  The lodge itself sits right on the river and consists of a few huts right by the water and a main building on too of a hill where you can eat.

The accommodations are rustic for sure.  Two beds, both with mosquito nets, no electricity, and a bathroom with cold running water.  For me, this was exactly what I was looking for and the beds were clean and comfortable.  The  mosquito nets keep me safe from the bugs and I loved the night time sounds of the jungle and the chance to feel disconnected from the bustle of Peru's cities.  I ate three meals at the lodge and all were simple but very good and prepared with ingredients that were obviously taken from the forest or the local village near the lodge.

I managed to fit quite a bit in during the 24 hours I was there.  The lodge has a dugout canoe that I took into the river for about 2 hours.  I was able to paddle quite a ways down the river and into the flooded forest and it was absolutely beautiful.  I felt like I truly was in a different world and I saw lots of interesting plants and birds and watched fish jumping in and out of the water around me.  On the way back, I even had a group of suspicious river otters investigate me!

I also took two hikes into the forest with Olmest, one at night and one in the morning.  Both hikes start from the lodge and wind through the surrounding forest on existing paths used by the locals.  Again, neither are through primary forest and so there should not be an expectation of a canopy forest with pristine wilderness.  Nevertheless, both hikes gave me an opportunity to see the forest and feel surrounded by nature.  The night hike was really fun and we saw LOTS of interesting bugs, frogs, spiders, and plants.  In the morning, we took another hike through the village to a place where Olmest hoped we would see monkeys, but we never found them.  I've spent enough time hiking to know that nothing is ever a guarantee, so I still really enjoyed seeing the village, the forest, lots of insects and butterflies, and some beautiful birds.  Oldest was a patient and knowledgeable guide on both trips and showed me many native, medicinal plants as well as identifying birds and other small creatures.

The second day, Olmest took me into Iquitos to show me the city.  We visited the market of Belen which was FASCINATING.  There is almost nothing you can't find in this market, from local medicinal plants to every kind of river fish to souvenirs and handmade crafts.  Oldest knows the market and its people extremely well and I got to see and learn things that I would not have been able to on my own.  

We then took another tub-tuk around the city to the waterfront where we took a boat out onto the Amazon and saw both grey and pink river dolphins.  They swam around our boat for maybe 15 minutes and I was able to catch glimpses of them as they surfaced.  It was a really cool experience.  Again, it's never a guarantee that you will be able to see the dolphins and Oldest was up front about that, but after reading the reviews it seems like there's a petty good chance of seeing them on any given trip.

Finally, Olmest took me for lunch at a market near the water where I had grilled Caiman and mashed green bananas fried withprok and rice.  It was one of the best meals I ate in Peru and I seemed to be the only tourist in the entire market.

After the meal, Olmest took me by motor taxi back to the airport in plenty of time to catch my flight.

To summarize, San Pedro is not a deep Amazon forest experience.  It does not have the diversity of wildlife you would find if you had 3-7 days to go much farther away from Iquitos.  What it does offer is a chance to get somewhere that feels far away within 45 minutes of landing in Iquitos.  There is definitely the opportunity to see wildlife and experience the forest.  Olmest is a very gracious host and willing to try and do whatever you might want to do.  An important note:  the staff does not speak English!  I speak a fair amount of Spanish and really enjoyed the opportunity to practice communicating, but if you do not speak Spanish, you will probably need to make your plans clear by e-mail before arriving so Olmest and the staff can line up activities.  

I really enjoyed my visit and would recommend it for anyone in a hurry and on a budget.  I can't imagine there is a better experience available for the time and money.

My husband and I had a short stay here.  We did 2 days worth of tours and 1 night at the lodge.  If you are looking for luxury, then this is not your place.  If you are looking for an affordable, authentic, peaceful experience...  then look no further, this is the place for you.  Tomas (I think that was his name) was wonderful.  He made us feel right at home and did a great job with the meals he prepared.  Nixon was our tour guide, and he was wonderful.  Both were very helpful with anything we needed.  Only thing I didn't enjoy was the stop to the local tribe on the first day of our tour.  It was very cheesy and uncomfortable.  They only care about trying to get you to buy things from them, and we would have much preferred skipping that altogether.  The Belen tour, Butterfly farm, river dolphin watching, Jungle tour, and manatee rescue center were all wonderful parts of the tour.

Rustic Lodge in the Amazon

The lodge did not deliver the tours that they had offered, they did not even apologize or offered us any other alternative besides walking in the surroundings of the lodge where we only found a couple of houses and a small graveyard (in five minutes you saw it all). We traveled to the jungle looking forward to enjoying the excursions and beautiful nature, not to spend our holiday in the lodge where there was not much to do.

They don't deliver what they promise.

The lodge and terrain were very disappointing with hardly any facilities nor atmosphere to it. At the back it is a half construction site and there is stuff lying around everywhere. There is absolutely nothing to do on the lodge's terrain, and the guy from the lodge, that was supposed to give us a tour never showed up again. The only remaining staff member seemed not to be interested in the guests at all. We have been in jungle lodges before, both very basic and very good. Based on the price, we expected very good. But it was very basic and we felt that this was completely unmanaged. 
We left the next day as early as possible to enjoy the Iquitos area. Our private tour booked in Iquitos was half the price of what San Pedro Lodge would charge us.
