Hotel Playa Santa Martha

We spent a few nights here in 2014 on our trip to Ometepe. We quite enjoyed our stay. The staff was good, the food and drinks at the bar were good, and our room was very nice! It is in a great location to explore the rest of Ometepe and to take the ferry back to the mainland.

I stayed here with my husband and a few friends, we all stayed in private rooms with two beds each and private bathrooms. The beds themselves were comfortable, the pillows not so much. We weren't provided with sheets, although we didn't realise this until we were going to bed and reception had shut, so that's our own fault for not checking sooner. The showers were cold but in the hot weather it's refreshing. It's right on the water which is really nice as you have a little beach, and you can walk along the beach straight to the ferry that leaves at 7.30am. The staff don't speak english, so if you don't speak Spanish you will need your google translator. They will try to put you in a more expensive room as it happened to all of us and friends who stayed here before us, so make sure you look up prices on the website and be very specific as to what you want. The wifi worked well in the common area but not in our room.

Nice hotel near the ferry

We loved staying here

Generously sized rooms, bathrooms, like most hostels, could do with an update but all clean which is the most important thing. There isn't much around, though we did have one of our best meals at the little bar about 50 meters away if you walk left along the beach, the fish steamed with a great vegetable selection. Wifi only works in the reception/dining room. There weren't too many people around, I'd strongly suggest staying in Playa Santo Domingo instead, we wish we had. There was no mention by the staff of any excursion so I'm guessing they don't offer any. Coffee was great in the morning!

Mediocre isolation

When I got to the hotel, reception had no idea that we had a reservation there. The woman who we spoke with at reception said her boss had not told her anything about our reservation and when I showed her I had booked online she said they only book by cash at the hotel itself. When I asked to speak with her boss she said he was 'out partying' and wasn't available at the time. She then gave us a key to a room anyway when we went to the room it was already open, the AC and fan did not work, she came back to tell us we couldn't stay and then I showed her the confirmation email I was sent after I booked the hotel. We chose to no longer stay there but weren't able to contact a taxi because there was no wifi as the hotel had promised and we didn't even have service. There were a few locals at the bar who did us the favour of calling us a taxi and while we waited the owner or manager showed up being completely inappropriate to myself and my friend saying perverted and discomforting comments towards us which completely petrified us so as soon as the taxis came my friend and I couldn't get out of there any sooner. So to sum everything up, we did not end up staying at this hotel.

Worst experience anywhere

We got off the ferry from San Jorge at the San Jose port on Ometepe Island. Our choices were pretty limited in terms of available hostels in the area. We found this one down a dark path, and decided to spend the night before moving on somewhere else the next day. Even though it was cheap, 7$/person per night, it was horrible! The water wasn't working, so we weren't able to shower, brush our teeth, wash our faces, nothing… To add to our frustration, the wifi didn't work either, nor did the electricity. I understand that sometimes this is out of their control, however when I asked for some kind of compensation the response I received was very rude and unhelpful. I would not stay here again nor would I recommend this hostel. I suggest making your way somewhere else for the night!!!
