A flat in a Soviet-styled apartment block turned into a boarding house-cum-hostel.  All very friendly with cooking and laundry facilities.

A big plus is the location where it is fairly close to a Metro station.  Otherwise use bus#25 or tram #6.

I paid 2500 Tenge/bed.

A Boarding House for Kazakh Lads as well as a Hostel for Foreigners

I totally not recommend. Unreliable people! Unfortunately I cannot leave a positive opinion. We , were in the end of 3 week travel around Middle Asia with strongly "controlled" budget.... and we booked a room in Kaz Hostel, it was a special offer, very cheap and nice looking, when we arrived it apeared that there is no place for us. A host told us that she forgot to cancel the reservation, her friend offered us a help in finding another room at the same price and transport for free. Of course it apeared a manipulation. He left us in twice or three times expensive place and demanded money for being a taxi... What a shame....

Unreliable owner! Cheater! Not recommend!!!!

The women managing the place was out right rude continously throughout our stay. As a group of three we were spending three nights in Almaty and moved after the first two because of the woman running the hostel. On our second night she woke our group up at 1:30 am to pay for that night. Her teenage kids live in the room we were given. They were fine but she would come into the room half a dozen times in the morning and at night to check on them. The hallway lights are on but when we would close the door to the room she would come by and open it. When we arrived and asked where a good place for us to go and eat was she said "you speak russian you can go ask someone on the street."  The facilities are adequate but the service was so bad it didn't matter.
