Guanaja Caribbean Cottages

Beautiful setting and a lovely cottage! Kay took wonderful care of me and made sure I had everything I needed. She is an amazing cook so definitely get the meal plan!

The cottages are right on the beach with a great dock. You'll enjoy the amazing ocean view and gorgeous sunsets. Bring your snorkeling gear because you can easily swim from the dock to the reefs. There you can see angel fish, grouper, puffer fish, gentle nurse sharks, and so much more!

The cottages are only a 15-minute walk to the friendly of Mango Bight, where you will find delicious local restaurants, including  Patsy's Place and Mimi's. Sea Mart is the central market and has everything you will need (groceries and supplies). Jenina is the owner and is super friendly. You will definitely want to meet her! 

If you'd like to go fishing, snorkeling, or take a tour of the island by boat, Kessel and Ray will take good care of you. They are both locals, so they know the best places to take you! Just ask Kay to connect you with them.

The cottages are comfy and well equipped. Loved the hanging twin bed while watching boats go by. Be sure and make arrangements for boat to come get you often so you can see more of the island and perfect beaches. We enjoyed sunsets, going into town and meeting the friendliest people on our planet. My hubby did the scuba thing several times a week. They would drop me off on a secluded pristine beach and then head out on a dive. I snorkeled w tons of fish and colorful coral. Fishing was good as well. Sea grass several places so look for sandy areas. It won't hurt you, I just don't care for it. Take Deet as the biting bugs love you. She has a good dock, lots of flowers. Owner will help set up anything you might need. She knows who to call. We mainly used Messenger or wifi calling. Don't try to upload pics or streaming videos, as you'll lose connection for a day. Hard to get to and not a touristy place but well worth some inconviences to enjoy the natural beauty. 

We stayed 5nights at Caribbean cottages my boyfriend and I and had the most beautiful holiday ever! This place is beautiful, clean, calm and Kay, the host, is adorable and will make sure your stay will be the best possible! We will definitely come back!

This was our first trip to Guanaja but won’t be our last. Let me start by saying that if you are looking for 5 star resorts, drunken rude tourists, a ton of people, and a lot of stress, this island is NOT the place for you. But if you’re looking for a friendly, safe, relaxing, authentic island vacation - Guanaja is the place to be. It is a great place to unplug, unwind, snorkel/dive, and see beautiful sunsets and stars. We have traveled all over the world but this place has the best reef. It is too awesome to describe! We spent two weeks over Christmas and New Year’s at the Guanaja Caribbean Cottages. Travel there was very easy. We left the US on Saturday morning, flew into Roatan, and took an island hopper airline to Guanaja (Lanhsa Air). From the airport we took a boat (which was arranged by Kay, the owner, who met us at the airport) to the cottage - and we did all this in time to see Saturday’s sunset. The same was true for our return. Things you need to pack for your trip are shorts, swimwear, snorkel/diving gear, water shoes with good soles, flip flops, flashlight, backpack to carry groceries, sunscreen, books, and bug spray with deet. Also bring a water container for your hiking trips, because YES…you can drink the water right out of the tap. There is hot water for your showers (they call it a suicide shower head that gives you hot water on demand). This location is about a mile from the closest town that has a grocery store, hardware store, and a couple small cafés that serve salads, hot dogs, fried chicken and hamburgers. If you don’t want to cook or carry groceries, get the all-inclusive package. There are no cars, scooters, or boats to rent. You don’t need them. There are only two towns (fishing villages) on the entire island, Mangrove Bight and Savanna Bight. There is only 1 road, about 4 miles long that runs between the two and there are taxis to take you. English is spoken by most of the locals but knowing a few Spanish words like hola, buenas dias, and gracias will get you the biggest smiles ever. The owner Kay knows everyone in town, can get anything you need, can arrange any travel around the island, and was instrumental in making this a relaxing vacation. I suggest using her as a resource. Also, take a trip to the key (Bonacca) on the ferry. It goes there twice a day. Bonacca has a library (with computers), lots of little stores, some restaurants, and even a doctor’s office (but it is much more populated than the mainland). Also go to Bo’s (within walking distance from the cottage). Get a margarita or a monkey la’la’ there. There are 4 waterfalls on the island, but 3 of the 4 are a hike. One is easily assessible from this location. There is no place fancy on the island, so leave your dress clothes at home. Someone else mentioned this place reminded them of Gilligan’s Island. That is true. Travel around the island is done mostly by boat. There are no dangerous snakes, spiders, or animals on the island, unless you count cats and dogs as dangerous:) The cottage location is on the leeward side of the island so there is less wind and waves to contend with which makes it great for swimming and snorkeling/diving. There is a satellite with wifi, but don’t count on it. It periodically goes down. Facebook works well there (but this is supposed to be a vacation, right?). Bring some DVD’s with you for evening entertainment. Leave your watch at home - it’s island time. Kay, the owner, has created her own slice of paradise. It truly is a miracle location. We have made friends for life there. After a week you will feel younger, healthier, and happier. We loved it! And can’t wait to go back. One last thing…you will need to take cash with you (US dollars) that are not torn or ripped in any way. If they are ripped you can’t use it and very few places take credit.

We have visited Kay twice. This last trip we added dinner included in ur stay.  Truthfully we expected just simple aND warm dinners, but we were blown away by her culinary talents.
The cottages are great, location is convenient to walk to Mangrove bight for groceries and things to do.  The cottages also are close enough to walk to Soldiers Beach away Michaels rock for incredible snorkeling days. As well as a waterfall.
After long days of cave adventures and 4 weeping all around the island we were Andale to come back to the cottages for incredible 4 course dinners.
Best food on our entire trip to Roatan and blend Guanaja...Ir you stay with Kay please do yourself a favor and include at least her dinners with your stay.
Given our experience with Kay, I can confidently recommend the other meals I'm sure if you decide to do all inclusive.

I know Kay tried, but we had enough problems with our stay that I can't recommend it. The biggest problem was that Kay had booked our Aero Caribe flights for a day that no flights were scheduled and we were stranded on the island for an additional night. Her comment was that it wasn't her fault since she had confirmed with the airline. However since she was the one who booked the flight, it is her responsibility to make sure the flight existed! She let us stay another night at her cottage, but insisted she was unable to feed us and we had to arrange for and pay for our boat ride to the airport even though that was supposed to be included in the cost. 
     The second big problem for us was the food. It was very short on fruits and vegetables and very heavy on cream and fats. This may appeal to some vacationers, but left us feeling sick all week. The two nights when fish was served, it was deep fried, very dry, and barely edible. The exception to this was some of the quality lunches of local Honduran fare prepared by her helper.
      Despite what the website says, she has no kayaks. When I contacted her prior to our stay, she said she had some on order but none appeared when we stayed 3 months later. They would have added much to our stay with the glassy lagoon and easy paddle out to buoys on the reef.
       The reef close to the cottages was just a few rocks and not very interesting. If you swim out about 15 minutes you get to the amazing barrier reef but this might be too much for some. The swimming near the cottages was marginal being all turtle grass and very shallow. You can walk down the beach about a 30-minute walk to Bo’s Island house that had a very nice house reef close to their pier. I can also highly recommend going scuba diving with Bo as he has done over 6,000 dives and provided a great experience. We went thru numerous caves, swam with a 6-foot nurse shark for 20 minutes and saw a moray at about 120 feet. Their Green Flash bar provided our best meal of the trip, succulent grilled fish with a nice salad and sides.
     On that note, it seemed fine to walk the beach both directions but according to Kay her neighbor has a pack of 30 dogs that have bit people. We never saw any but when we walked with her, she acted concerned and she wanted to walk close to us and had bug spray as a deterrent for the dogs. She obviously believes it is a problem but didn't mention it until after we had walked it a few times. 
      The cottages themselves were fine with reasonable furniture, kitchen, bath, and AC. The internet worked occasionally and was very slow; working for every other day email access only and nothing more.
     Kay doesn’t have a liquor license so you should bring your own. Rambo who picked us up at the airport, was very friendly and helpful and his store in town has a couple of beers and a selection of wines and liquors. It might be difficult to prepare your own meals however as they only had a few tired veggies and limited stock of other items but we weren’t there for their weekly delivery on Thursday.
     Overall, we enjoyed Guanaja, it was safe with friendly locals and had nice diving but we wished stayed elsewhere.
