We ended up staying here in the off season when another hotel cancelled our booking at the last minute. My wife and I don't speak German, and the fine folks on the night shift at Hotel Hafen Hitzacker don't speak much English, but this was our favorite place we stayed in Europe! The restaurant food was phenomenal (I have never had venison that you could eat with a fork), the room was palatial, the staff was super-friendly, parking was free, WiFi was free, and the location was picturesque. We enjoyed walking through Hitzacker and driving around the surrounding countryside. The other review is right - Google Maps takes you to an entrance that wasn't actually the check-in location for us. Go around to 2 Kranplatz (attached to the restaurant), and you'll be in good shape. We wish we brushed up on our German more before coming here - we think we would have gotten much more out of the experience, but the staff handled our lack of language skills wonderfully.
