We last stayed at the Anker Hotel in Saalfeld in 1978 when the DDR did not provide good support for visitors. Today the hotel is a wonderful example of how a free economy can revolutionise a hotel. It's wonderful!

Returned to Saalfeld for my second visit and enjoyed the hotel last time so decided to stay again. Really large rooms a bit dated but this adds to the charm of the hotel. Located right in the main square of the town.

Hotel Anker in Saalfeld is excellent

Nice family hotel in a great town

I have a nice room overlooking the square and restaurants were within walking distance. The room was homey and comfortable, and the bed was very low to the floor. I had the best sleep, there!

The internet there is no good, except for in the lobby, but you can purchase an inexpensive package. There is also no elevator, so you can expect to haul your luggage up a flight or two.

On the square

I stayed at the hotel for a week on a business trip.  The staff is very friendly and the rooms are spacious.  Lighting is a bit dark in the winter, but overall adequate.  My room faced the town square so my view was great. Hotel internet was spotty and I ended up buying a Telecom plan for 20EU that worked quite well.  The room isn't fancy, it's fairly simple / functional.   I found the bed quite comfortable.   Bath is modern and nice.

Breakfast is very good.   The last day I had to catch an early train - well before the breakfast start.   The staff were great at making sure I had coffee available and surprise me by opening the buffet early - just great hospitality!

Good Basic Hotel

I have stayed at this hotel more than 20 times over the past 18 years and its problem is its no different now than it was 20 years ago ! 
It is always spotlessly clean and the bed is comfortable. At the rate of 56 Euros including breakfast its cheap and excellent value but it has 3 things that always annoy me.....firstly as a single occupant they give you a double bed but a single duvet cover and just the one pillow .....what the hells that all about !!!!  secondly, the coffee at breakfast is the worst i have ever tasted anywhere in the world ....it makes American coffee taste good.....lastly the shower cubicle is smaller than an old style British phone box .....but in fairness the shower is always very hot and powerful.....no doubt i will stay there again on my next visit to Saalfeld
