My wife and I have been lunching at L'Oronge for years. I was first introduced to it when I was a travel writer for national magazine. I guessed it must have offered a warm welcome and good value when I was taken there as a guest by the Tourist Board of the departément. St Jean-du-Gard is in the midst of the glorious Cévenne scenery in this quiet and fairly remote corner of southern France. We found eating out in the shady first-floor courtyard of the hotel the most enjoyable experience. The food whilst not 'trendy' offers great value the menu is well chosen with some local dishes of hearty food and excellent salads made with local produce. Be warned though, the last time we went to L'Oronge, we were reluctantly turned away by our ususal waiter as there was no room at the inn! If it's high season, book ahead! Although we've lunched at the restaurant many times, we've never actually stayed at the hotel.
