Hotel Old Times

We were in this hotel for three days. The room was big enough, for us it was important that was  clean. They may only have to put some stance on the movable shower. The view is stunning, the height is pure - mountainous. The location is very good, walking 10 minutes to the center. The staff was kind and friendly, even our car parked in the yard the first evening, the second night was in the parking lot opposite the hotel. You can take a walk to Asenova fortress -2km. on foot or by car. The view is amazing. By car you can visit Bachkovo Monastery, Krustova Gora and more sights.

Hotel Old Times does what it says on the tin..... it offers comfortable accommodation in two charming and well restored and improved traditional Bulgarian buildings. Our en suite (shower wet room) room was on the top of three floors and boasted mountain views from both windows and a small balcony with room for a single chair. The staff speak very little English but seemed helpful and the chef seems ready to cook delicious meals at any time.

Parking is on the street outside, but few cars were parked in this street, which is less than five minutes from the simple shops, bars and restaurants of Asenovgrad town centre down the hill and across the pretty river. 

The hotel is sited on the edge of the old town, so a few minutes walk towards the Rhodopes Mountains nearby takes you out of town and if you go around the bend and take the right turn posted to Asen's Fortress, an invigorating (uphill but not too steep) after breakfast walk to the fortress takes around 20 minutes and rewards you with some stunning wooded mountain views as well as a pretty restored medieval church perched on a peak just below the fortress ruins. 

Highly recommended stop for a couple of days en route.

Surprisingly

Traditional Bulgarian hospitality and great food!

Lovely little 2* hotel in a sleepy village. Rooms were quite tiny but comfortable and clean with a great view of the village and mountains. Not keen on the shower without a curtain and no base water tends to get everywhere the whole bathroom floor is wet.. Put the toilet paper up high to avoid wetting it by accident. There are other room options so look into that when booking I think we got their standard twin. Breakfast was a big plate of ham cheese egg and toast. Staff were lovely tried there best to communicate. Plovdiv was an easy 15mins drive.

Cheap and cheerful

Asenovgrad is an unattractive city near Plovdiv but at the head of a wonderful valley route which leads quickly to both the Assen's Fortress and the Bachkovsky Monastery - both must-see sites. So it was welcome to find a reasonable hotel, unfussy and a bit faded, in a quiet area at the south of the town. Quite a large room, bed acceptable and a breakfast outside on a small terrace.

Comfortable, small hotel in a quiet location

The hotel is located nicely near the river and the restaurants. In the room the decoration is great, old times-like. The view is good, our room looked out to the inner yard. The downside was that there were holes in the bed covers and in the bathroom the shower head holder just fell off the wall. Also, breakfast was not included in the price, although websites say it is.

Not what I expected

They must have taken it a little too literal. The place looked deserted when we arrived and it turned out that the restaurant and bar were closed either for the season or for good. The receptionist did not speak English but we got by with the translation on the phone. Our room was a suite on the corner of the 1st floor. The first impression was nice but a closer look revealed that some update was needed. There was a broken lamp shade and damaged lock to the balcony door. Then it turned out that the water pressure was very low. We parked our car in the courtyard of the hotel. There was only space for 1 car and it was awkward to get in and out. Access was through a gate which was narrow and right in a street bend.    The next morning we found that the shower over the bath tub was not working at all. The water was just squirting out through a broken seal. Neither bathtub nor shower could be used. A couple we spoke to on the floor above us had the same complaint!
The breakfast was limited with few items to chose from but we got used to that travelling in this country. When we complained about our room, especially about the fact that we couldn't have a shower we were offered an apartment about 200 m away from the hotel. This was in a new building and we accepted the offer straight away. Parking was a problem though. We had to pay 1 lev to get through a barrier and then hope to find a space within the pedestrian area.
