I was collaborating with the owners several years ago in that hostel for a month, all very well, until we had an incident of robbery in our room. The security of the place at that time was terrible, and it is located in one of the most beautiful (and dangerous at night) neighborhoods of Salvador, the Pelourinho. Despite that, access to the place was not secure enough and someone outside entered my room and stole my camera. Something, moreover, very strange, because the only thing they took away, as if the person knew that someone staying in that room had a camera (professional).

Very safe, impeccable hostel, its super friendly owners, I recommend,for location, security and good-bye.the breakfast is very complete, the rooms are safe and clean, with cameras throughout the hostel, Vallan tranquilos.

Super Hostel! The staff was always super friendly and smiling, speaking mostly Portuguese, Spanish and English, the rooms were air-conditioned and ventilated, and in the heart of El Salvador's old town I highly recommend it.

It's a great place.

Pais Tropical is a laid back hostel that's located in the Pelourinho district. I spent 6 days in a private single (with 2 twin beds). The room looked like the pics online. There was almost no natural light in the room. So I would get up around 6-7 am and sleep in the hammock in the lobby because I like to get up with a little sunshine. The staff was helpful about how to stay safe in the district and where to go. 
I call this a "laid back" hostel because they were no "events" organized/promoted by the hostel despite the fact that the hostel's first floor contains a medium sized club (it was used as a breakfast space while I was there). Everyone did there own thing. Most of the hostel guests were couples so if you are traveling alone/ want to meet people that may be something to anticipate. 

In my time in the district I did see a lot of other hostels in the district that I don't recall seeing on the major sites. So a "google" search may be needed.

What you see is what you get

The room was spacious and bright. The bathroom was well equipped, the shower functioned well. Breakfast takes place in a pleasant and good place (bread, fruit, sweets, juices, coffee and tea, although there is at least one toaster). It is in the heart of Pelourinho, a fairly safe area. 24-hour care. The wifi in the rooms is pretty bad. The daily cleaning of the rooms is zero: they just empty the trash can and then a meal in the bathroom, not even the bed is made.

I highly recommend this hostel! for a price of about 40r/night for a bedroom bed, or 110r/night for a private room (55r per person), each room and dormitory is equipped with air conditioning that can be turned on and off whenever you want (unlike other hostels that turn on and off at fixed hours). Breakfast is included in the price, and is probably one of the best I've seen after about thirty hostels in Brazil! You want to serve yourself, with a large selection of food panels and the dining room is good.

The pousada is located right next to Jorge Amado's museum house. The location is excellent! The staff is very kind and always available to help customers. The 3 bedroom with private bathroom is simple but decent. In the average hostels breakfast. They have laundry service.

Set in the Pelourinho

We stayed at Hostel pousada Paìs tropical for 3 nights in november 2016. Very nice place, colorful. The staff is nice and give you useful information. The position is perfect, right in the center of Pelorinho . The breakfast is quite good as well

It is located in the heart of Pelourinho, in front of the plaza where Michel Jackson's video was shot, and has walking distance to the bus station, bars, restaurants, all touristic spots. the owner and the staffs are amazingly friendly, and rooms are simple but  expansive. Personally, I loved the breakfast area since it was quiet, peaceful and colorful with tasty buffets.

Amazing location !

This hostel was perfect for what we were looking for when searching for places to stay in Salvador. It's right in the center of the historic district of Pelourinho, making it a very convenient location for walking around. The breakfast was a great start to the day with fresh juice, bread, cheese, fruit and coffee and tea. The staff was able to arrange transportation to the airport, which was also a plus. A very affordable hostel in a great location.

Upon check-in, the staff wasn't able to see if we had prepaid or not for our stay. We were able to sort it out, but it seems like this information should be clear to the hostel staff when accessing the reservation. We were also given a different room than we originally booked. Again, not a huge issue for us, but it seems like the front desk was a little disorganized.  Wifi and hot water were hit-or-miss, but this is a hostel, not a luxury resort. 

All in all, we had a wonderful stay in Salvador!
