Le Grand Almandier

We had a great weekend at Le Grande Almandier. The location is hard to beat for seeing the turtles. The beach was fairly calm during our visit so we were able to bathe and enjoyed it. The river was flowing and clean so my toddler enjoyed it. We were very pleased with the meals served at the restaurant, their soups were amazing. Most notable is the amazing service we received from Cherryann, Brendon, and Georgiana, from check-in to meal service and to just being so kind to us. They are truly invaluable and made the experience a very pleasant one. We will be back!

Excellent friendly service. Sherry Ann and Georgiana (mom's name) are super sweet. The children loved Sherry Ann. Clean Rooms just 5 star everything. The food is beyond excellent. Would definitely be returning next season.  🌟🌟🌟 🌟 🌟 .

If ever I am in Grand Riviere again this place is DEFINITELY where I'll be stopping by to have lunch or dinner!!

I had both lunch and dinner here and the service was prompt, courteous and their food is definitely worth it. Very well seasoned and cooked. You can tell that the chef takes pride in his/her meals and it's evident in the taste.

Wendy, the proprietor, was great as well as everyone! Goergianne, Cherrie-Anne- so wonderful. It was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy. And watching the Leatherback turtles nest was amazing. It was a very safe and secluded space. And the food was perfectly amazing, even for someone as particular as me. I highly recommend for those wanting to experience the Trinidad island culture and hospitality.

This place was on the beach, very clean and cozy. The staff were very hospitable and eager to help. The food was delicious and very affordable. I would highly recommend this place to others.

We stayed here with our 7 year old over the New Year's weekend, as we wanted a quiet getaway and decided to try something different for New Year's.
We arrived on Saturday and stayed through the weekend until Monday. The weather was terrible across Trinidad over that period, but we still decided to go, since the rain was not too bad up there and the roads were passable. The drive up to Grand Riviere, although long, is always something I look forward to, so we enjoyed it despite the inclement weather. We arrived and had no issues checking in. We were the only guests for the weekend, except for a couple who ended up leaving the next day.
We had stayed here a couple years back and vowed to return just for the food, it was that good. Seafood was fresh and food well seasoned and the hotel did not disappoint this time around. Breakfast was included in the room rate and it was a full breakfast, with all available options to choose from. The lunch and dinner menu, whilst limited, was a treat and food was always well presented, tasty and fresh.
Due to the inclement weather, there was an issue with the local water supply and electricity was cut on the first night. However, we did not let this deter us from enjoying the weekend especially as the hotel staff did their best to alleviate the situation, even bringing hot water up to our room for us to shower. There was also a generator on site so this helped to power the fans, although the rooms were so cool, it was not necessary. The room was bright, spacious and well equipped with all that we needed for a comfortable stay.
Sunday was Old Year's and we enjoyed the special dinner menu that was served that night. We stayed up to ring in the new year and there was even fireworks across the village, so along with our wine, we did not miss any of the New Year's celebrations!
The location of the hotel is right on the beach and alongside the river, although we could not bathe this time around, since the river was dirty due to the weather.
It might be a bit of a challenge to keep young kids entertained as children normally expect a pool and other activities at a hotel and due to the location in a remote part of the island there are no restaurants or malls nearby. However, there is lots of space to play and it is a good opportunity for them to experience nature, especially around turtle watching season. There is also a beautiful waterfall just 2 minutes away from the hotel which we were sure to enjoy.
We loved the peace and tranquility and it was refreshing to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. 
The extra drive up to Matelot is also well worth it. 
Service was impeccable and one would not think that we were the only guests for the weekend. Special mention must be made of Cheryl, who went out of her way to ensure we had an enjoyable stay. All of the staff that we encountered were friendly and helpful and no request was too much.
We truly enjoyed our little getaway and it was a wonderful reminder of the beauty that our country has to offer, both in terms of nature and the warmth and friendliness of our people.
We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and would definitely be returning for another visit, as soon as we have another opportunity.

Rooms very clean, staff pleasant. The star of the show is the food at the restaurant… simple but very well done. Not a bad experience. Very safe and rustic feeling . The drive to get there is long but lovely, roads pretty good by Trini standard.

We has a family room which was a fantastic size, beds were comfy, everything was clean, couldn’t have asked for more. The experience of watching the turtles come up on the beach to lay their eggs was just amazing, a memory I will treasure. 

The food for both dinner and breakfast was excellent, however I would advise you to allow a lot of time for your meals. Food is tasty but good lord we waited so long for it. Breakfast took over 2 hours!!! The servers were very pleasant and smiling constantly and there was tea to make as much of as you wanted but the coffee had to be ordered. Five at our table wanted coffee but only 1 pot came out, we explained how many needed coffee and another pot came a good 10 minutes later. We really needed one pot per person but this never materialised. Also, the bread it seemed,  they were baking one loaf at a time! There were 8 of us and a basket of bread would come with 6 slices in it, we would ask for more, wait a good half hour and another 6 slices would come. At the end it was comical to be honest. 

Lovely experience, very happy with our stay here just allow loads of time to get your meals. 

Our family had been planning to visit Grande Riviere for Turtle watching for some time now, which was postponed due to the pandemic. We finally decided to venture last weekend and stayed at the Le Grand Almandier. What an excellent choice. It's the doorstep to turtle watching bust most of all the staff are extremely friendly and hospitable. Kudos especially to Ms Sheery-Ann and Brenden. Our family of seven enjoyed every minute of the serenity and FOOD. 
OMG, the dinner and breakfast were excellent. We did not have lunch as the breakfast filled us all. The portions, variety and presentation were spot-on.

To see truly wondrous sights, you need to have a sense of adventure and be willing to venture off the beaten track, a euphemism that best describes the arduous journey one must take along the long, winding, pothole ridden road to Grande Riviere, one of the more remote sections of the island. The attraction? Being able to see leatherback turtles lumber out of the churning waters of the north coast at night and drag themselves onto the beach where they proceed to dig deep holes in which they lay up to 100 eggs at a time in under 20 mins, after which they cover their tracks and lumber back down the steep incline into the safety of the ocean. And there is no better place to stay while you witness this truly amazing sight than Le Grande Almandier. There are only a handful of hotels on this beach, all locally owned and on a world ranking, would not rate much above a two- or three-star ranking. But when it comes to local hospitality and quality of food, I would say that Le Grande Almandier ranks right up there in terms of local cuisine and hospitality. A big shout out to Sherry-Ann, who kept us entertained with local lore and news, while plying us with fully loaded drinks and some of the best meals we had on our holiday, including a truly memorable breakfast of local foods. Rooms though small, were clean, had balconies looking onto the beach and offered a warm welcome by having the bed strewn with magenta bougainvillea flowers and a welcome sign spelled out with palm leaves.  Would recommend two nights to enjoy the cuisine, explore the area through local tours and to rest up after the arduous 3 hour minimum drive, depending on traffic and point of origin.

Although we were staying next door, we decided to give the restaurant at the Le Grande Almandier a go.  Great Trini hospitality mixed with a relaxing ambience as well as a classy level of service that was somewhat totally unexpected in a small village restaurant off the beaten path.  Kudos to Sherry Ann and Georgia and Michael.  Polite and funny and engaging!!!

The food was very good (we had the lamb and the chicken) and very prompt.  Georgia who was our main server was always available to us and just made the entire dining a pleasure.

Dining at Le Grande Almandier

We'd originally booked one night at the hotel, with my plan to drive from Port of Spain to Trinidads North East coast, along the coast with a night at Grande Riviere then continue west towards Blanchiceusse,spend a night there then back to POS.Unfortunately I'd struggled to find a decent road map of Northern Trinidad online and had misinterpreted a walking track as a road! The road west of Grande Riviere actually ends at the village of Matelot.Although Blanchiceusse is only around 20km away it requires back-tracking half way to POS then taking a road North- a journey of around 3 hours! I only realised this when the rental car company provided me with a proper map at the airport. After a 2.5 hour drive to Grande Riviere on some pretty bad roads, we decided to stay for 2 nights.

We found the hotel without too much trouble in the small village, though there is no sign on the main road. It's a 2 storey structure right on the beach with an open plan reception. We were greeted by the cheerful receptionist Sheryl, and shown to our room on the 2nd floor directly overlooking the beach. The room was quite small in floor space but had a high wooden roof. There was a small balcony to the front- just big enough for 2 chairs. The bathroom held the toilet and shower with a sink in the bedroom. If I had a complaint about the room it would be that it was quite dark with the shuttered windows.There was a/c though we didn't use it- preferring the sea breeze through the shutters.We were warned not to sleep with the door open in case bats entered- they were quite large so it would have been no fun sharing a room with one! In general the room was clean, a little cramped and worn at the edges (e.g. The door had lots of Trinidad promotional stickers stuck on randomly and furniture on the beach facing sun deck had seen better days). However, staff were friendly and helpful and at 650 TT$ it's half the price of Mount Plaisir next door. Breakfast is included in the room rate and is served overlooking the beach- it was tasty and good quality with a decent choice too. Very nice!

On the first night we opted to eat at Mount Plaisir hotel as we fancied the pasta on their menu (which they didn't actually have when it came to order!) The meal at Mount Plaisir was passable, though quite small portions for the price paid. We ate at Grand Almandier the following night and the quality and quantity of food was much better.

On the first night at the hotel there were 2 other guests, on the 2nd night we were the only ones there- Sheryl knocked off around 9pm so we were literally the only people around- the whole village had an 'off season' air whilst we were there (3rd week of Feb).The prime season begins in March with the turtle nesting season which we were a little early for. (We heard there was a turtle on the beach on the morning we arrived and we got up at dawn on the 2nd day- we saw tracks but no actual turtle.)

We kept ourselves amused with a nice walk in the surrounding countryside/ jungle and a drive to Matelot. The beach outside the hotel has quite big waves so not ideal for swimming.On the first day, which was a Sunday we were caught in a huge rainstorm and retreated to the local bar. This was well populated with inebriated locals (Sunday being prime limin' time)- Many were bare chested and stood outside the bar drinking from bottles as loud reggae boomed out. It could have looked intimidating but we did what we usually do in the Carribean and approached with smiles and hand shakes and were soon firm friends, sharing the local 75% proof puncheon rum.
We later went to 'Sunday school' at another local bar which is quite the opposite to anything run by a church. Good fun if you're prepared to 'get down' with the locals.We slept well that night to the crashing of the waves outside our window. 

In summary we thoroughly enjoyed our time in this remote village in Northern Trinidad. It has a wild,remote feel, especially out of season. The Grand Almandier is no 5 star resort. It's a modest, but clean beach front option. Half the price of the Mount Plaisir next door and much friendlier and with better food in my opinion. Sheryl was ever present during our stay and was always friendly and pleasant- a credit to the hotel.


Good Beach option in a friendly 'off beaten track' village 

Wonderful and relaxing getaway

We stayed two days at this hotel, principally because it is on the beach where leatherback sea turtles come to lay eggs and to see the hatchlings go the sea at dusk...fascinating experience. The local aera is quiet and great for hiking and swimming in the Grande Riviere and on the beach The food was well prepared and delicious, knowing how far the village is any urban center. Great recommandation.
