Hotel Thüringer Hof 

Hotel Thüringer Hof is a quirky establishment that was the base of our 10 day exploration of surrounding areas. It's located close to the Jena West station and within walking distance of Jena Parides station. The location is on the main road and the entrance is at the rear of the building. You have to enter via a cobblestone courtyard. It looks like front of the building was once part of the hotel but is now used for other purposes (e.g. a pizza shop). Reception is the bar. The hotel is not DDA and less mobile people would have difficulty climbing the stairs. There are also some strange steps along the corridor that could easily be tripped over. The room was basic but OK and well sized. The free internet was good quality and reliable. There was no ventilation in the room so can be quite stuffy on warmer days with the windows open. Traffic noise was intrusive but with the windows closed was virtually non existent. The shower was rather difficult to manoeuvre and would be almost impossible for a mobility challenged person. Rooms are not serviced on Sundays or public holidays. That was mentioned in the German version of the in room guide but not in the English version. We were caught out. Little English is spoken at the hotel. The breakfast buffet is good and adequate for the style of the hotel. The atmosphere was generally quiet with patrons keeping to themselves. The breakfast attendants changed from day to day. One of them was officious and "directed" people to sit. His manner and "customer service" style was probably unacceptable in 2019 (ow 2020) but the mostly German clientele seemed happy to obey orders. His style reminded me of my trip through the DDR in 1974! As mentioned, the hotel is close to public transport which we used to explore the surrounding areas using "Lander" and other good value tickets.
