Mai House Resort

Mai House is a few km south of the main town. A few hundred metres from the main road so you are real close to a bunch of street food restaurants should you so desire. Beautiful garden setting and is right on the beach with a great pool. Some of the trees in the resort must be growing since Phu Quoc was discovered. They are huge. All the bungalows are nicely spaced out and private. Not just a straight line of bungalows. The gardens are well tended and lovely. The "superior beach front rooms" aren't really beach front but more like "angled view toward the sea". All the rooms are well located, some better than others but hard to tell what you are getting from the booking site. The beach is nice but the water isn't great. Cloudy and a little froth on top as you would expect with so much nearby development that drains through the sand. Nice loungers on the beach and at the pool with umbrellas. Nice but not geat sunsets. The bungalows are traditional, wooden doors and windows. Comfy beds. Good aircon. Usual low wattage lamps but OK. No TV. Hot water was solar and took several minutes to arrive. Wifi was real flaky. Fantastic bandwidth or none. Yes there are geckos. There was one rooster but no big deal. Where isn't there wildlife in Asia? We didn't see a single mosquito. The housekeeping girls arrived at dusk and with military precison entered the bungalow, lit an incese burner, arranged the very nice mosquito net around the four poster bed and then lit a mossie coil outside near the door. Breakfasts were OK. Not a great range but nice fruit, cereal, baguettes, bacon, crepes and eggs made to order, good coffee. Restaurant is right on the beach so a great start to the day. Happy Hour provided a free cocktail of the day to each guest. No choice. There are many dining options nearby and by walking up the beach we sampled Cassia Cottages and also the wonderful Peppertree. Lovely resort, pity the water quality on the beach isn't better.
