Enjoy a relaxing stay in beautifully maintained rooms. Outstanding hospitality, unbeatable value, and hosts who truly go above and beyond to make your experience unforgettable. Wouldn’t hesitate to book here again and again, I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in this area.

What a treat! We took my aged father out to lunch to the Royal Oak today after several recommendations. We were greeted by the very friendly manager who gave us great service throughout our meal. We sat in the bar to enjoy the friendly atmosphere and banter and were served the most delicious food. The sea bass was a delight, and the home made puddings were fantastic, especially the apricot bread and butter pudding and Eton mess. Husband and father were most impressed to be offered ice cream, cream or custard with their desserts, and so they chose all three! 
We will definitely return! 

Returned from a lovely weekend break here. The Accomodation is very very comfortable and well decorated, furnished and maintained to a high standard, with all you would expect. Our full English breakfasts were superb as was the fantastic menu for evening meals by the new chef. Will definitely return and recommend highly! The landlord and lady make exceptionally friendly, welcoming hosts. 

It's a pub and a really good one at that. It's not part of some massive chain so don't expect it to be but it's clean and the staff are amazing. Upton is only a short distance away and for what it is, I cannot recommend it highly enough, I'll definitely be going back there.

This is s lovely place to stay lovely room and very homely pub to have a quiet drink only one fault I could find was the breakfast even thought this didn't bother us as the rooms made up for that and a very reasonable price but everything else perfect

Staff were friendly and really helpful.  We ordered main course only and had 2 very different ones I had Chicken with Pasta and the other order was Gammon with Pineapple and egg and chips and peas.  Food arrived in a good amount of time and was very good.  Service was excellent and we felt well looked after.  It is Pub grub but it was good and plenty to eat.

Just returned from weekend at The Royal Oak. Bar staff lovely, friendly and helpful. Regulars in the pub made visitors welcome and restaurant good. 
What a shame the visit was spoilt by the accusation we had taken one of the bath towels. Apart from the fact the bath towel was off white and definitely seen better days, the cleaner had merely missed the towel hanging on the back of the bathroom door. Had she cleaned the room properly she would have seen it and not branded guests thieves. Wont be returning

Good things first:
The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, plenty of hot water and the bar staff were polite and friendly.
The bar and pub has been remodelled to a very high standard but has very few customers.

The funny bit: 
Breakfast was prepared by the non English speaking Italian chef and served by his obliging and amenable son who saw no reason to remove his outdoor coat!
We asked for sauce and he smilingly gave us some salad oil and balsamic vinegar.
We asked if there was any orange juice and he said, “Yes.”
He made no move to get any until we asked if we could have some.
        
Now then: 
We booked a room for four nights in order to be on hand for visiting mother-in-law who was seriously ill in hospital.
At 6:00pm on Day One, the friendly lady behind the bar showed me to our room (one of a set of chalet/motel type rooms behind the pub)
Wife arrived later after leaving the hospital.
Both tired after travelling across country and wanting an early night, we didn't pay a lot of attention to the accommodation but realised, early on day 2, what we had let ourselves in for.
1. The lavatory seat was not the seat for that particular pan and was hanging on by one fixing.
2. There was nowhere for toiletries other than a floor level ledge boxing in the water pipes.
3. The acrylic bath, over which the shower was fixed, had not been fitted correctly: there were no supports underneath making standing on it for a shower akin to showering on a slippery trampoline.
4. The main room had no wardrobe, just a rail in an alcove with a mixture of scrappy coat hangers.
5. There were no drawers for storing the usual underclothes, socks etc so one had to live out of a suitcase.
6. The bed had a bedside table and lamp on one side only.
7. The hospitality tray with kettle, cups etc was on the far side of the room but the only available socket was next to bed (on the side where there was no bedside table) so the kettle had to be placed on the floor next to the bed to make a drink.
8. There was an ironing board but no iron.
9. Website claimed there was a hair drier but there wasn't. Barmaid didn't know about that but promised to find out.
10. One wall had a good sized mirror but there was no nearby socket in which to plug a (non existent) hair drier.
11. Radiator had a thermostatic control but the actual heating was programmed, elsewhere, to operate between 6:00pm–11:00pm and 6:30am-9:00am. Hence, in late October, we both woke up at 4:30am because the room was so cold! Having woken up, a trip to the bathroom was in order but, because I had no bedside light, three minutes of stumbling across a pitch black room to find a light switch was necessary.
12. The bedroom had one large unfrosted window which meant kitchen staff were able to look straight into our room unless we pulled down the blind.

On Day Two, I pointed out our concerns to the lady behind the bar who, later, said that the owner's wife would come to see me at 10:00am the next morning.
So, on Day Three, I waited until 11:00am then a maintenance fellow turned up to say he'd come to mend the toilet seat.
I asked about the other problems and said I was expecting the owner's wife to come and see me. He said she wasn't coming because she was looking after grandchildren! He did go off and came back with a bedside table and lamp plus a chest of drawers which he'd taken from another chalet.
He also left an extension cable!
At 6:00pm I spoke to a different barmaid expressing my deep dissatisfaction.
She said she wasn't allowed to give me the owner's phone number but would pass on my problems.
Returning after an evening meal, I asked what progress had been made and the barmaid said the owner's wife would come to see me at 10:00am the next morning (Day Four!)
We bought a drink but didn't stay very long because of the six rowdy, drunken men at the bar (the only customers) who's language was choice to say the least!
It transpired, later, that one of them was the owner himself !!!
Day Four: By 11:00am the owner's wife still hadn't made an appearance and we had business to be taken care of.
Seeing a new car in the car park, I went into the pub and tracked down the owner's wife who said she was going to come and see me.
She accepted all my comments and made excuses for most of them.
One was, “Most people only stay for one night.” 
Read into that whatever you wish.
The best was, “You don't get a wardrobe at Premier Inns!”
Not true, actually, but an intriguing exoneration, nonetheless.
The lady offered us a free meal in the restaurant on our last night but, having only seen six diners all week, we declined and I asked for a refund (I'd foolishly paid for the room in advance)
I was reluctantly offered no more than £50:00 in recompense which, with equal reluctance, I accepted.

	We paid £80:00 per night for the room with breakfast included - a total of £320:00 for four nights.
	Taking the £50:00 refund into account, we ended up paying £67:50 per night which was, still, not good value
        for money.
	
	My initial advice is to look elsewhere.
	If you are absolutely desperate, ask to see the room and don't part with any money until 	checking out.
