Came for the Christmas fayre menu. Managed the starter of soup which was very tasty. The main course arrived, turkey with all the trimmings. The portion was huuuuge and the quality exceptional but you guessed it we couldn’t finish it and were unable to eat dessert. We even had to take the complimentary mince pies home with us.  Such a lovely friendly atmosphere and outstanding cuisine.  Looking forward to coming again next time we’re in the Lakes.

Fantastic food and a warm, cozy welcoming pub. Definitely worth revisiting ! There is a great variety and the home made pizzas are amazing ! Try the home made pies for a real treat! We have also stayed here and is a great place for a quick stop over on the way to the lakes .

Great Pub Grub

We stayed local to this inn, our first trip to Lake District. We discovered that our Airb&b didn’t have cooking facilities and the Herdwick was a 5 minute walk/ we ended up eating here for our evening meals 3 nights on the bounce, 
Was always warm with a friendly welcome, menu is large  and varied, the landlord/lady always polite and attentive. 
Great children’s menu also, it gets busy from time to time and was made aware that there may be a longer wait than usual, but the food is always worth it.

We’ve been here a few times over the years but this was the first time in a while - and a happy evening it was too. Really friendly welcome from the landlord and our waitress, the decor’s got a  clean and modern feel without the pub losing its historic charm (and the Halloween elements were pitched just right - fun but not overwhelming), and the food’s good quality pub grub that’s attractively presented. Mum particularly loved her lamb casserole and dumplings, and for all three of us the crème brûlée was a sweet highlight (& a large one too). Top marks - and we’ll be back!

Very nice meal everyone enjoyed their food . Belly pork was beautiful.   Sticky toffee pudding lovely . Eton mess looked really nice . Try that next time . The lady waiting on was very helpful.  Will be eating there again .  Nice and friendly staff


We enjoyed a very pleasant meal here recently from the bar menu - I had fish pie and my husband steak and kidney pie. Good size portions and plenty of fish/meat. Dog friendly (in the bar area) and a log fire too so what's not to love! Good luck Jamie with your new venture.

We really enjoyed our meal here. Great food (gluten free options included), really nice staff, relaxed atmosphere, good value. Definitely worth a short detour off the A66.  Best home-made chips!  And gluten free crumble.  Excellent all-round.

Limited menu for lunch due to COVID but loads to choose from and all really good.  Pleasure to meet the owners and local staff who seem to care 
This is a business worth visiting for service and flavour
