I had a 4 night break to explore the countryside in South Devon and Malborough is close enough to the sea to be able to walk there without needing a car which I wanted and it is near a bus stop so you can go by train which I did.You can see some of the more out of the way places by foot which are not commercialised and there are plenty of footpaths and lanes to get around. there are a lot of options for walking and day trips.I had a single room which was economical with a newly refurbished bathroom.There was some traffic noise as I had a bedroom in the front.

Amazing! Proper pub! 

Bar maid was outstanding and made our last night in Salcombe! 

Food very good value family of 6 not one complaint!

The Royal Oak is brilliant. This is a proper, proper independent pub, kitchen and bed & breakfast. It remains how rustic, traditional pubs used to look. There’s not many like this left anymore - This place is genuine. 

I’m so glad I chose to stay here instead of booking a boring, strict and expensive Air B&B. This place has way more character and is so humbly priced.

My room upstairs was newly fresh, clean, immaculate. The food was top notch too. Having worked in kitchens myself, I knew a lot of care had been put into it. 

The staff were incredibly considerate and kind to folks beyond their call of duty. They might not know how grand they’re treating you because to them, it’s just a shrug of the shoulders. Tim, the landlord and his staff are really cool folks.

The Royal Oak sometimes have great live music on certain days too, so ask them when that’s happening or when it isn’t. 

If you ever find yourself in Salcombe, or anywhere in Devon for that matter - Drink, eat and stay here. 

I can’t praise this gaff enough. 

I stayed at Tim's pub for one night while walking the South West Coastal Path. I can say confidently that this was one of the best stops I've had while passing from place to place. Tim himself is very down to Earth (and hilarious!) The food was all well cooked, clean and tasty. The room I stayed in was clean and charmingly quirky and the bar service and atmosphere was some of the best I've ever had: this place creates a friendly, quirky and charming atmosphere; everyone is welcome here! If you're looking for a 5 star hotel: this isn't it, this place has character and charm instead. Thanks, Tim and the bar team! Best wishes, Will. (With the MASSIVE rucksack!)

This is our second time staying with Tim-  when you first meet him you think hmm he’s a bit grumpy- actually he is lovely and very caring  - the rooms upstairs are always immaculate and the moment you walk up
The stairs you get a clean laundry smell . 
His breakfasts are to die for and we look forward to returning next year again! 
And as for the review about the dog- the dog is lovely but a very old little man and sometimes they have accidents! 

The lady who now works with Tim is absolutely lovely , so polite , welcoming and really made a fuss of our little girl.

Tim and his dog Mowgli were the best hosts! Tim is lovely and nothing was too much of a hassle for him. The rooms are pretty basic but clean, cosy and have a kettle and coffee/tea, etc. I'd recommend staying here!

Tim was a lovely helpful chap, nice large room with comfortable bed. Additional towels & loo roll would be useful.The place had a lively bar with pool table. Location was ideal for travelling around area to some lovely nearby beaches etc.

Having already visited last year, we knew exactly what to expect and we weren’t disappointed. 

Clean rooms with everything you need and breakfast included too - you’ll not find better value for money in the area. 

Tim who runs The Royal Oak is superb. He can come across really miserable but he is actually one of the nicest and most genuine people we’ve met. What you see is what you get and he’s actually a big softie who is very outgoing.

We parked in the village car park which is a short walk across the road. Very pleased with our room which had a beautiful mirror and everything you need.  The shower worked well and there was plenty of hot water.  We ate in the bar and all the food was good, whether cooked by Tim or the chef.  We tried the fish and chips, burger and steak along with a few drinks.  We especially enjoyed our full English in the pretty courtyard.  As reported by other reviewers there is a quirky collection of art and photos from Tim's time in the music business.  Sadly there is currently no live music but I can imagine there would be a brilliant atmosphere. Do not be put off by the slightly unwelcoming exterior, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return.

For who want something different is the best place!! the pub is full with interesting statues and pictures, room was clean and Tim is such a great guy!! Charismatic and funny, I have loved his sarcasm, this guy is verry cool,u don't see so often guys like him,and he cooked a fantastic English breakfast and the best burger ever! Really worth the money,for sure I will visit this place again! Tks Tim!!!

Scenic rambling.

Best choice in Salcombe…

The landlord was wonderful and willing to go the extra mile for his guests. The room was very comfortable and cosy, complete with a desk and chair. I didn't have a problem with the room's artwork depicting the female form, but I can see why this might not be to everyone's taste! The shower looked modern and worked really well, but no shower gel or shampoo was provided. The one thing that really bugged me was the dodgy Cloud wifi, which was both unsecure and unreliable. Worked ok in the pub but kept dropping out in the room. And I couldn't get it to work at all on my Samsung phone. Although you can park on the road outside, I don't recommend this as the road is quite narrow and frequently used by wide heavy farm machinery. Fortunately there is a free car park by the village hall, less than a 2 minute walk away. Windows were single-glazed so didn't keep the noise out, but the road outside is pretty quiet (apart from said machinery) so it's not really a problem.

Authentic English Pub with lots of character!

Second time here

If you are expecting this to be a top notch, first class establishment, then you might be disappointed.   If you book this because you need a B&B in the area and understand its the cheapest by some margin, then you will find its a fine place to stay.  Friendly, nice breakfast, convenient and  cheap.  I would stay again.

Enjoyable Stay at Quirky but Interesting Pub

Excelent experience

What a fantastic pub, has a bit of age and loads of charm but with added touches that make it special
Proper pub grub excellent bangers and mash.
This is a comfortable place for those who enjoy a beer or drink in traditional surroundings- it’s brilliant.
I will be visiting again, it nice to find a locals pub not dominated by the tourist trade.
