The Birkdale Guest House

Such a lovely place with fantastic hospitality from the staff. Breakfast was delicious with lots of options. The guesthouse had quirky deco and little touches like homemade biscuits made it extra welcoming.

Fantastic adults-only Guest house situated centrally in Shanklin and not too far from the promenade and shoreline. Superbly run by Leslie and Colin who have carefully considered all elements from tasteful, appropriate coastal decoration to quality furnishings, exceptional bedrooms and ensuites. Each guest room has more than adequate facilities for hot and cold beverages in the room, plenty of hanging and cupboard space, quality furnishings again and all very clean.  Breakfasts are just fabulous - pre-booked the day before but a very wide choice and something for everyone. Freshly cooked with quality ingredients well presented, you’ll never leave hungry. 

It really is impossible to fault this wonderful guest house and we will be back. Praise to Colin and Leslie for providing such high standards and 5 star accommodation and friendly, approachable service.

Myself and my dad have just stayed at the Birkdale for the IOW scooter weekend. The hosts of the Birkdale, Lesley and Colin, are absolutely fab! They go above and beyond to make your stay perfect. The twin room that we had was spotless and we loved the little extra touches such as the homemade biscuits and the fresh milk in the fridge. The breakfast here is incredible! So much to choose from (I was spoilt for choice every morning) and Sarah who works in the morning is a star. We loved our stay here that much that we re-booked for next years scooter weekend there and then!

Have been regular visitors since 2014.

Hosts Lesley and Colin are second to none. Assisted by the lovely Sarah, a truly excellent team.

The premises are spotless throughout providing private resident parking. Guest rooms are tastefully decorated being furnished to an extremely high standard. The owners have thought of every home comfort imaginable! Attention to detail is spot on. Room amenities include a refrigerator. Lesley's "home made" welcome cookies alone are not to be missed. 

Breakfast is as good as it gets even compared to a "top end" hotel. Hot choices cooked to order and perfection include locally sourced products. The IOW sausages are a must try! Good vegetarian options too. The oregano tomatoes are to die for!

Location absolutely perfect being just one minute walk away from Shanklin Old Village which houses numerous pubs and restaurants catering for all budgets and tastes. The theatre is just minutes away on foot too!

Have no hesitation to return! Came away with two bookings for 2024!

The Birkdale - SIMPLY OUTSTANDING!

 This is the place to go. I have stayed in a lot of hotels on the Isle of Wight since I started to visit. Lesley and Colin are wonderful they do every thing to make your stay wonderful. They have everything you can think of in the bedrooms including a fridge for fresh milk. The breakfast is out of this world Lesley does a great job. Every where is spotless clean. We got stuck getting from the train station to the hotel in the rain and Colin came to pick us up. They really are lovely people. We have been 3 times in two years. You will not be disappointed with The Birkdale.

Mrs Davies and I really like the Isle of Wight, we’ve been visiting since we first got married in 1989 and make the return journey as often as we can to mark our anniversary.
We found the Birkdale in 2017 whilst doing a search for a place to stay with a difference, the four poster bed in the room we booked into grabbed our attention and we subsequently stayed and had a fabulous time.
Time and tide turned and by the time we were looking at another stay we were all locked down, no travel, no IOW that year.
This year however, all restrictions have been lifted, time to escape.
We were more than pleased to find the four poster room in the Birkdale available and booked it without hesitation, ferry booked and away we were.
The Birkdale has changed hands since 2017 but has managed to maintain the warm welcoming feeling that was present with the previous owners.
Everything is spotlessly clean and well presented, tea, coffee & milk all replenished on request (fresh milk in a glass bottle! Real bonus)
There’s a fridge in your room, two bottles of water in here along with the milk, again, glass bottles for the water so you refill them from the bowser in the entrance hall.
Breakfast I here you ask, what about the breakfast? All very good, chosen the day before from a vast selection on the menu, freshly made fruit salad, home made natural yogurt followed by a full cooked or smoked salmon, the choices are yours. It’s worth mentioning the sausages here…. They are to be tasted to be believed, knock spots off supermarket sausages (I asked where they got them from so I could get some to take home)
On the morning of our anniversary, at our table, a card and a bottle of Prosecco, this simply added to what was turning out to be a fabulous few days away.

We had a wonderful weekend at the BIRKDALE, the hosts Lesley and Colin were so nice, nothing was too much trouble for them. The guest house was lovely and breakfast was excellent with so much choice. Would definitely recommend and hope to return in the future. Thank you Lesley and Colin 

We stayed at the Birkdale for two nights. Everything from checking in, the room, facilities, the comprehensive information pack were perfect. Everything has been thought of, and it has to be one of the cleanest hotels I have ever used everything was spotless. The breakfast choice was varied, and once again everything had been thought of, and was on the table ready upon arriving in the dining room. The food was fresh and delicious, and the service was great. Would highly recommend to anyone. Lesley and Colin were most helpful and made sure we had everything we needed for a lovely weekend. Nothing was too much trouble.

What a great place to stay - the best guest house we have ever stayed in. The house was spotlessly clean, our bedroom was beautifully decorated and the bed very comfortable.  Lesley & Colin are perfect hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them, even arranging the ferry bookings. We really appreciated the home made cookies, fresh milk & water in our bedroom fridge and all the toiletries which were provided. There was a wide selection of food offered for breakfast which was prepared to perfection - the fruit salad was amazing.
The homely touches and attention to detail puts The Birkdale in a different league from other guest houses and it is really good value for money.  We would recommend it to anyone wanting a stay on the Isle of Wight.

Fantastic Guest House

The Birkdale is something rather more than a guest house. It provides all the little extras one would expect to find in a good class hotel. Nothing is forgotten in the quest to make the guest's stay as comfortable as possible. It is spotlessly clean and looks freshly decorated. The bedroom I stayed in whilst not huge was perfectly adequate and the bed very comfortable, the Wi-Fi, included in the price, worked perfectly. There was a small fridge which is a nice touch, especially in the hot weather, a profusion of teas, coffees etc are provided. The bathroom  was well appointed with a nice walk-in shower and all toiletries etc provided. Breakfast was excellent with a huge choice of menu, ordered the evening before, and served in an attractive room with well appointed tables. My only concern is that breakfast time is slightly restrictive being just 8.30 - 9.30, possibly an earlier start could be considered but this might be difficult with the lovely Lesley and Colin doing everything themselves.

Wonderful stay in Shanklin

Thank you to Lesley and Colin for our wonderful stay at The Birkdale B&B Isle of Wight, June 25 2022 … Despite our car troubles! 
We’d stayed before when Jackie & Bill were the hosts, and had lovely stays too. So we were pleased that Lesley and Colin were just as friendly and also excellent hosts : )x  
Unfortunately our car had to go into the garage for 3 days of our holiday, after a major fault whilst visiting The County Show. Luckily the bus service was so good and we were at the perfect location in Shanklin, for it not to spoil our holiday. 
Lesley and Colin were perfect hosts, the breakfasts were amazing, with lots of special touches. Our room was perfect, and all was lovely and clean. Lesley & Colin also gave us lots of tips on places to visit whilst on the Island 
Colin very kindly helped drop us at the garage to collect our car once it was fixed. (A big thank you to the lady at Wilsons Garage too, who arranged everything to be done so quick!)
We would definitely return again! The location is ideal, but would recommend booking ahead at restaurants for evening meals as places do get booked up. We also recommend seeing the Best of the West End, Musical shows held on Thursday evenings at Shanklin Theatre, just a short walk from The Birkdale. 
Beautiful beaches and pretty little villages will make you want to return to this lovely Island again and again! .. and spending a relaxing week at The Birkdale, with Lesley and Colin as hosts!

Favourite B&B !

We are just back from our first visit to the Island and so pleased we chose the Birkdale  as our base. Lesley & Colin could not have been more welcoming and their attention to detail is what sets their establishment apart. Nothing is to much trouble and the whole building is sparkling clean. Excellent selection of options for breakfast which sets you up for the day. Plenty of good advice on walks, attractions and places to eat (we found it best to book as it seems they are busy most evenings). No question where we will book on our next visit.
