The Smithaleigh Hotel

We rented a 2 bedroom apartment for a week and it was a clean and tidy accommodation with everything we needed.

An ideal location that offered an easy drive to Dartmoor Zoo and Plymouth 

Very good value for money and around 10% cheaper than anywhere else at that time of year 

Highly recommend and will definitely book again in the future!

Stayed for one night booked 6 rooms, 5 of which were doubles / twin rooms and 1 was an  2 bed apartment  that slept 4.  ( Apartments are only meant for min 2 nights but accommodated us) .  Very clean comfy, ample parking.  didn't have breakfast as needed to be on the road early.    would stop again. 

We stayed at the start of August after a very late confirmation the team were more than helpful, even though we didn’t check in until 10pm!
My wife joined the member of staffs yoga class the next day and couldn’t fault it!
5* we will look to stay again in the future

This is our 3rd stay here and we are very pleased with the accommodation and the staff are always friendly and helpful.  We have found it to be quite here and good location to get to places.

Warm welcome. Very newly refurbished super nice apartment. Warm welcome, super countryside and sunset view from bedroom, great parking. Spotless clean, very good shower, comfy beds . Easy to find. Would recommend. Flexible and accommodated our late arrival.

This was the first time I have stayed  at The Smithaleigh and it was only for one night on business.
 
My first impressions were good, an older building that had been modernised with plenty of parking. 

I did not get to the premises till about 6.45pm and there was someone waiting for me to book in and get me settled in which I appreciated.

The business is classified as a B & B so I was not expecting any meals bar breakfast but the person greeting me asked if I was staying for breakfast which I confirmed and mentioned I would be down early. What a nice surprise the next morning when the chef had pre-prepared my breakfast as he knew I would be wanting to leave early.

However to their credit they recommend local eateries that were very good and I enjoyed a meal at one of them.

The only downside to the stay was the creakiness of the floors but I put this down to the fact that it was an old building but perhaps there could be more insulation to muffle the sound.

The location is in the middle of the countryside, just outside Plymton, so anyone staying for any length of time would need transport and be prepared to venture out for food every night.

I thought there could have been a lounge area with perhaps an honesty bar to sit in meet other guests and relax somewhere else than the room.

Good location (just off the main road) and a friendly welcome. Also appreciated the book swap shelf! Otherwise nice but not brilliant. However, it was cheaper than other places in the area so we felt that the room was good enough value for money. Unfortunately, we couldn't say the same about the breakfast - £6.50 for cereal and toast, £8.50 for a very mediocre cooked breakfast.

Fine but not exceptional

Poor quality all round. The beds were very basic and broken strates under mattresses. Very little coffee and tea left out to use without having to ask for more. Tired decor. No electric fan on the hottest day of the year. One very small piece of soap fir 2 night stay. No where to hang clothes only draw space.
No where within walking distance to eat.

Not for me

Very friendly staff. Reception mostly closed so have the phone number to hand. No bar or food. Nearby garage for fuel and other items. A work in progress and I wish them well.
Ridgeway is the nearest location for pubs shops and other amenities.

It was ok.

We were really disappointed with this accommodation which in reality is nothing like the photos or information on the internet. We had booked an apartment for 2 weeks and left after 1 week as soon as we found somewhere else to stay. 

We booked a 2 bedroom apartment for 4 of us (2 adults and 2 teenagers) and agreed with the owner that it was dog friendly and he was happy for us to bring our  well behaved Cockerpoo. On arrival we were greeted by the comment, 'I didn't realise you were bringing a dog...'  We reminded him of the conversation in which he had joked about it not being a Great Dane who would slobber on the furniture, and we asked where would be suitable to walk the dog.  The answer was down the grass verge at the side of the main road (A38) directly outside.  There was no access to any gardens or fields as advertised, and no footpaths within walking distance. A major problem for any dog owner. 

On arrival we realised that it was more like a motel surrounded on 3 sides by an ugly tarmac carpark, which was used every day by lorries and workmen's vans, who parked directly outside our ground floor apartment windows.  Noisy, smelly and ugly to look at - had to keep the curtains closed as they were looking straight in to the apartment. No idea where the pictures of a restaurant or bar came from - certainly no facilities of any sort on site,  not even a communal washing machine and there was no freezer or freezer box in the fridge. 

The inside of the apartment bore no resemblance to the pictures.  Despite Covid and the need for extra vigilant cleaning, the window sills and blinds were dusty with dark coloured old dust that had clearly been there for some time and would be harbouring any bacteria or viruses around.  The extractor fan in the bathroom was broken and there was mould growing on the bathroom ceiling and grouting - the only option was to open the window to get fresh air (and wave to the workmen whilst on the toilet or in the shower). The Shower support was rusty and the bath was cracked. The seal on the shower screen was old and inefficient and therefore the bathroom floor flooded every time the shower was used.  The plug holes were disgusting and had not been cleaned out for some time. 

The bedrooms were no better - pillows and mattresses were stained. Dusty fake flowers in the windows and stained cushions on the beds. We were short of towels on arrival and it was with great reluctance that we were able to secure towels for 4 people.

The sitting area had seating for 3 - we had booked for 4 people - and asked if we could have a 4th chair of some sort.  We were told by Simon that he had no more and we would have to use a dining room chair to sit and watch TV in the evenings.  We opted to buy a camping chair instead. 

There was insufficient crockery and cutlery for 4 people - we bought 4 new mugs for our own use and opted to eat out as much as possible. 

When we informed Simon that we were leaving he did not seem interested in why that was and just told us to post the key through the permanently closed reception door. 

If you are desperate for a 1 night stop over en route to the ferry or something, fine, but otherwise do not stay here.
