Excellent food, very generous portions. I had a lovely steak and ale pie which was clean homemade. . The staff are extremely friendly and very  helpful. It’s a lovely old pub with a great atmosphere, very centrally located by the bridge. You can sit outside or in, it’s also dog friendly.

A fantastic proper English Country Pub that does excellent Ales and Sunday lunch. Great service, reasonably priced and in a great location. Our first visit but will definitely be back. Excellent range of ales brewed on site. Just what we needed.

We stayed here for 3days in August excellent location,the staff were friendly and helpful good choice of beers as brewery is attached

Lovely weekend stay, one of the little cottages to the rear, with dog. Friendly staff at all times, clean rooms, pub good food 👌.Coniston brewery here helps 😀,  Bluebird XL up there with the greats. Location excellent and parking available, nice breakfast and very friendly lady serving, thank you. Stunning location.  Reasonable pricing.

What a lovely pub, the burger was  really good even if it was a little over priced. Staff generally really nice. Short blonde haired bubbly member of staff who was there on the saturday we visited  was very polite and chatty, made us feel very welcome, unlike the bald headed guy who called me a "moron" cause I asked for white sugar for my friend to have in her coffee. He shouldn't be in the hospitality industry as he is anything but!! Maybe the blonde lady behind the bar could give him some pointers and show him how's its done! There was another lady behind the bar who made negative comments and looks regarding a drink I had ordered without know the medical reasons for the ordering of that particular drink!! I found this somewhat embarrassing. If im verbally abused again on our next visit i will make representation to the management. We have been here before on previous visits and found it to be one of the best pubs in the area and will not be be put off by a rude minority when the pros out way the cons. Keep up the good work guys as you out shine the competition. 

Went in 2 nights on the trot. Muddy with dog. Very welcoming and good beer & food. Not the cheapest but worth paying for ...will go again. Short menu which is a good thing...unlikely to be a freezer full from the wholesaler.

We (group of 5) came here after a long hike up the nearby mountains and were tired and hungry, but this place made the perfect end to our walk. We had fish and chips, steak and ale pie, and pork belly, and they were all so good, I couldnt get enough! Unlike some places that serve you a pot of pastry with hardly any filling, the pies here were fantastic, as recommended by regular customers sat next to us. 
We tried one of every beer, and the Bluebird, Stout and Old Man were great!
I would 100% recommend!

I’ve been coming to Coniston for years and this has always been a favourite place to visit.

I was here on my own this year and the welcome at the Bull was as warm and welcoming as always, both to me and my dog. I ate here a few times too over the 2 weeks I was in Coniston and the food was excellent on all occasions, particularly the Cumberland Sausage and mash. 

Luckily for me K7 was available this time too, they must have known I was coming.

Can’t wait to visit again on my next trip to Coniston.

We visited with our little boy and dog, and received friendly service.  The bar staff were great and the food was good pub food.   

The bluebird bitter is a good drink and this is a lovely pub for a relaxing evening and nice to enjoy a meal out with the whole family.

This was a lovely little find.  The staff ( especially Lea ) where all incredibly friendly and couldn’t do more if they tried.  
Fantastic breakfast and even found me soya milk.     
We had dinner there too one evening and it was superb.    The fish and chips and veggie curry where awesome.   
Great local ales on tap too. 

Rooms where comfortable but basic.  Our room was dog friendly.   No shower but lovely hot bath for the end of long day walking

Visited here as a couple for three nights 

We stayed in room 9 which was a family room

The room was a good size and well appointed. Located at the back overlooking the mountains and hills and a fast flowing stream. We found the room to be quiet. Bed was large and comfortable. Room was lovely and warm. Bathroom was good, no issues with hot water or water pressure

The pub was very traditional, with loads of seating and tables

We ate in the pub each night. There was a good selection including specials (Sea Bass). The food was reasonably priced, good sized portions, was hot and came out quickly. We had no complaints and thought the meals was the best bit

The bar and waiting staff were really excellent - friendly, helpful and efficient 

Breakfast was a bit disappointing. Cereals, juice, tea or coffee, toast, full English or full vegetarian or ham and cheeses. There was no porridge option which was disappointing. Our main gripe though is breakfast was served from 8:30 onwards!!! fine if you are just visiting and sightseeing but far too late and absolutely no good if you are hiking and planning a big day in the mountains like we did on one of the days - we were out for 9.5 hours and would have being chasing the light. By the time you are done with breakfast you are setting off at 9:30 which limits what you can safely as the days shorten. We skipped breakfast on one of the days for this reason so brought our own breakfast and ate in our room

WiFi. Good downstairs in the pub but really weak in our room. Difficult to connect sometimes and would drop out. Best signal was sat in the corner on the red leather chair, so needs some boosting!

Car park is small, enough room for 10 cars, but we didn’t have a problem 

Location. Well placed in the centre. We did two walks from the pub and bagged eight Wainwright’s 

Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this simple and unpretentious pub

Weekend getaway

We only went here for some drinks on an evening and were welcomed by the bar staff including Trudi. 

It’s got a nice local feel to the place and is very dog friendly.  Half is carpeted and half hard floor.  So remember this, if you want your dog to be comfortable. 

First pub I’ve been been to that doesn’t take cash.  So it’s debit/credit card or Applepay only.  Not an issue really - but worth knowing if your a die hard cash is king type.

Our thoughts on the Blck bull

We stayed in Coniston for a week and frequented the pub regularly. My husband tried most of the different ales available. Good selection of gins too.

I had an absolutely delicious ginger sponge pudding.

It would have been 5* except the pub closes particularly early, calling last orders at 10pm even on a Saturday night when there were plenty of people in the pub

We had a couple of beer only visits and then a final one where we ate.

The beer was brill, good to see them serving stout which seemed v popular. 

The staff were welcoming and friendly. 

We liked the fact that there was a small menu (incl veggie/vegan options) with tasty sounding daily specials. My chicken supreme dish was nice but I would have appreciated more mushroom sauce. Fresh n firm veg though...nothing soggy here! 

Defo worth a visit for the cosy atmosphere. 

Can't beat a good, locally brewed stout

We popped in for lunch, had a lovely meal and a couple of drinks. The bar staff were lovely, very friendly. It seemed to get very busy and then quiet, again and again. Interesting to watch this happen. We loved listening to the staff speaking to locals while we ate, they were very funny and natural comedians!
