Overnight stay whilst doing the Coast to Coast. Very welcoming on arrival, shown to our room (room 3 - twin room) which was great. Clean and comfortable with a very nice and modern shower room attached, which was most welcome after a days walking! Food in the restaurant was fabulous and huge portions, for hungry walkers - although you can request a smaller portion which quite frankly we found more than enough! Some good local beers on offer too and a great walking/ climbing community of resident, all willing to chat and swap tales! Great breakfast choices, packed lunches on request for those that want one, and flasks refilled at no extra cost. 

Very welcoming and well organised hotel. Last stop on our E to W coast to coast walk and it gave us everything we wanted. Amazing showers, great selection of beers and good food in the evening,  Very organised process for allocating (pre ordered) packed lunches to walkers and serving breakfast to enable early starts to coast to coast walkers in both directions. 

Last May I stayed at the Shepherds Arms while on the Coast to Coast Walk.  Upon my arrival I was greatly warmly and invited to relax before heading up to my large and very comfortable room.  Although my bathroom was across the hall, I had the only key and a enjoyed a soak in the massive tub.
I enjoyed an excellent pie for my dinner, served in the relaxed bar area.
Breakfast was served in the large, bright dining room.  Despite there being quite a few other dinners the food came out promptly and hot.  
This year I will be back in the area and have already booked my room.  I look forward to returning.


Fabulous weekend with excellent walking and superb food.
We have been coming walking in this area for quite a few years and eaten in The Shepherds Arms on every occasion, this time we decided to stay over for 2 night, we will definitely be doing the same again.

Lovely village pub in superb setting. Homely atmosphere with attentive helpful staff. Great food at the Shepherds whether it’s calling in after a walk or a Sunday lunch. Food consistently good. The bar serves a good selection of drinks including locally brewed beers.

Stayed as part of our Coast to Coast Walk.  The location was perfect for that.  The staff were very welcoming and clearly used to hikers.  The bed was super comfortable and I loved the ability to simply walk downstairs for dinner.  Dinner and breakfast were both excellent

We stayed at the Shepherds Arms on the Coast to Coast walk. We had great service throughout our stay, and the food was spot on too. 
It's on the Coast to Coast route, so no extra walking or taxi transfers.
Have to say, they had the best Steak Pie I've had for years, and it was a proper pie cooked in the pastry, not just stew with a bit of flakey pastry thrown on the top which other lazy restaurants seem to prefer.
We'll be going back, but next time for more than one night as the hotel is situated in an ideal spot for walking

Stayed here last night as a base for walking some nearby Wainwright's. It's also I'm told a popular stop for the coast to coast walk.

I was given room 4. A double ensuite. I had booked a single so was pleased with the upgrade. 

This is everything you would want for a walking base. Warm comfortable room, hot shower and good food downstairs. 

My room was recently decorated and the ensuite recently modernised. Comprehensive tea tray, TV, free WiFi good towels and some free shower gel and shampoo. A good thought was the small clothes horse in the room to dry your gear on. 

Breakfast was included and amongst the best I've had!  Ate downstairs in the evening and it was a nice atmosphere.  Food was tasty and well priced. 

Owners and staff were friendly and had time for a chat. 

Would certainly stay were again as a base for the western fells.

We called in for Sunday lunch without a reservation.  It was very busy so I would recommend booking if you want to guarantee a table.  The welcome was friendly and we were fortunate to get a table. 
We had one lamb and one beef Sunday roast dinner and it was superb. Loads of meat which melted in the mouth, freshly cooked veg,mashed and  roast potatoes, gravy. Excellent food and amazing value for money.  We were stuffed and couldn't manage a pudding but they looked great too.  A credit to the chef.  
Will definitely be going back!

Spent two nights here (dinner, bed and breakfast)  Great value at this time of year.  Staff very friendly and helpful.  Good menu and food quality excellent.   At this miserable time of year it was lovely to have dinner by the cheery wood burner. 

 I could survive for days on one packed lunch! 

Our room was spacious and comfortable; the ensuite bathroom was beautiful, seemed very new.  

Was pleased to see staff still wearing masks and encouraging customers to do so too.
