The Samson Inn

Room was nice and practical. Clean and tidy and quaint. The food was really good and good value. There was  good choice on the menu. The breakfast was very nice too. The staff were friendly and helpful.

A lovely community pub with excellent ales and a great kitchen that happens to also have cozy rooms above—all prerequisites if you’re walking the Wall. Our room was clean and comfortable and though the pub was a delightful din of laughter and talk, upstairs when we turned in it was blissfully quiet. Highly recommend!

A nice inn on Hadrian's path - also the establishment of choice to grab a bite to eat in the very small village of Gilsland.  The inn room is perfectly serviceable and well kept, a clean small room with a good (small) bathroom, and the food in the pub is much better than average - the food here is really good and a notch above the typical pub meal. A friendly welcome and good staff (they know walkers) help to make you feel at home.  If you're walking the wall, I recommend booking this property - and do yourself a favor and book your meal table at the same time - there are not a lot of evening options around here!

I stayed here whilst walking the Hadrian's Wall Path, it is literally a two minute diversion off the trail. The staff were friendly and helpful, to say the least. The room was confortable and clean. The food in the restaurant is good value and served promptly, this also applies to the breakfasts. Although I stayed at the beginning of a week, the restaurant was busy so probably advisable to book. This was the third time I had stayed here and it never disappoints.

Good location if you are walking the Hadrians Wall Trail, as it’s literally less than 2 minutes walk off route. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff were lovely. But the winner for me was the food provided in the bar/restaurant. Hands down the cheese soufflé was the most gorgeous thing ever! 
Fingers crossed they get their railway station, which will make this Inn a even more perfect location for guests.

We stayed here for one night while on the Hadrians wall path. Accommodation is good and clean and food was very nice. Breakfast was great with nice ingredients. The lady working when we arrived was fantastic and very helpful (sorry we didn’t catch her name).

We had  lovely stop off here for a couple of pints last week whilst walking Hadrians wall, the staff were amazing. The girl behind the bar (wish I'd caught her name) did a little bit of shopping for us and dropped at our next destination, this was such a kind gesture and we thankyou very much, 

My wife had wanted to visit Hadrian's Wall for the last 70 years - finally we made it.  A six hour drive3 from Norfolk but the minute we arrived, the drive was worth it.  We were warmly welcomed to the Samson Inn - to my mind a real old country inn.  Our room was very good indeed as was the en suite.  Everything was spotlessly clean.  We had evening meals at each of our 3 nights stay, enjoying the beautifully cooked food on each occasion.  Breakfasts were everything for everyone - an excellent start for those travellers who were walking the wall.  The service we received from all the staff who multitasked so well,  was absolutely excellent.  I did say on leaving that if I lived nearer, I would be a regular at the Samson Inn.  Even so , I wouldn't rule out another six hour drive some time.   Thank you Samson Inn for a delightful weekend.  Value for money?  Could not be better

A really nice country pub with accommodation on the Hadrians Wall Path. The room was spacious, clean and well appointed. Staff were very helpful and super friendly. Food in the eveniong was very good and reasonably priced and a very nice breakfast included in the price. Only had one night here but I would definitely return if I was staying in the area. Thanks  all for a very pleasant stay.

Amazing Staff and very good food , very clean rooms  I had stayed here before with my brother for 1 night while walking the wall.

Two years later we stayed for 4 nights it was that good and in the prefect location.

In fact I have booked the whole place for family next year 

The location is great for exploring the wall, nice small village and easy access to main roads,

Great Place to Stay

Probably the best pub / accommodation on the wall trail

Visited after a long hard and very wet days walking on Hadrian's Wall with 2 friends. Could not have been more welcoming. Clean tidy warm rooms and offered to dry some wet clothes. Lovely beer and evening meal and the lamb tagline was excellent. Great nights sleep and breakfast was great with added bacon sandwiches for the next days walking. Faultless service could not have been more helpful.

A welcome break

A one night stopover during our Hadrian's Wall Path walk. Conveniently located for the path, and welcoming after a long day of walking. Staff very friendly and helpful, and the rooms were better then expected from the outside - nicely furnished, clean and with the usual amenities.

It was quite close to the railway, but actually didn't hear a thing. The restaurant was very nice and it was great not to have to walk anywhere for dinner. the lamb tagine in particular was a hit.

Breakfast was great as well the next morning -  we really enjoyed our stay.

Nice little Pub/Restaurant and Hotel


Atmospheric pub in Gilsland just off the A69 between Carlisle and Hexham, perfect for exploring Hadrian’s Wall.  Vicky and her team made us feel very welcome, bedrooms 2 and 3 at the front were a decent size, bathroom was tiny (only room for one person at a time) though good shower, bar and lounge area were cosy with wood burner and an endless supply of logs.  Good bar supper with big portions so you might want to consider two starters (we are not huge eaters).  Cheese soufflé recommended.  We had a look at the much trendier Twice Brewed pub a few miles up the road towards the Vindolanda Roman Fort and were pleased we had chosen the Samson.

One of the delights of the Samson Inn is that you have some lovely walks on your doorstep.  We enjoyed the 3 and half mile circular walk to Birdoswald Roman Fort in the morning, the highlight of which was the return loop back along a very attractive section of Hadrian’s Wall;  and another 3 and half mile loop in the afternoon, this time along the River Irthing to the Popping Stone (where a famous person once popped the question) and back again.  We took our own picnic but doing these two walks with a stop for a bar lunch at the Samson would be nice too.   You can pick up an excellent walking map for both walks from the English Heritage ticket office at Birdoswald Fort (somewhat to our surprise the Samson Inn didn’t carry these maps).
