The Maltsters Arms

Its a bit of a pain to get to but thats probably why its still  a lovely location.  Stopped for an early evening meal , a pleasant dining area overlooking the river . Really enjoyed the food of belly pork, monkfish scampi a tasty burger and fries. Couldn't fault it,    the service was great too

My wife and I stayed at the Maltsters for 1 night on the 11th of July.
The whole experience was brilliant 
The rooms are reasonably priced just £67
00 including a fantastic breakfast. 
The situation is stunning right on the riverside. 
The pub is advertised as dog-friendly which it most certainly is. Our two dogs Ziggy and Nala were treated as guests and nothing was too much trouble all this with no extra charge for them as apposed to some places will rip you for up to £20.00 per dog.
Thanks to all the staff who made our stay special we will be back.

Sunday lunch, the full roast, at a riverside setting.  It was high tide and numerous boats, canoes and paddle boards were arriving at the quayside as we ate our excellent Sunday roast.  Friendly service and sensibly priced

Fantastic food, great atmosphere, wonderful setting. Food was pricey, but extremely nice. As a treat occasionally it's well worth it. 
Would definitely recommend and return when we are on holiday again. 
Staff are very friendly and welcoming.

We had scallops with black pudding and sardines on toast to start, followed by sea bass and sirloin steak as our main course

Everything was cooked to perfection. Delicious flavours and excellent service 

Definitely recommend

Came for Sinday lunch. We ate outside by river with stunning views. Fast service, absolutely incredible food, and i have high standards !  Tender and delicious beef, wide selection of side veg (red cabbage cooked in spices, cauli cheese, roasted parsnip and carrot), roast potatoes, sprouts, lovely rich gravy, and lots of yummy horseradish. Generous helpings, reasonably prices, all washed down w gorgeous house red in elegant shaped glass. Best roast i have had for a long time. I liked the fact that it was a bit more old school re: over enough meat and big plate of side veg , instead of being served not quite enough meat with one or two carrots and potatoes nouveau cuisine minimalist (a stingey) style. My friend had pork loin w crackling and apple sauce, and that was excellent too. Not sure if it will always be this good or if we just got lucky w chef who worked thst day, but will be going back soon to find out !

Wow.

I almost didn't stay here because I hadn't been able to get through on the phone, but unbeknownst to me they had shut for a week to give their staff a break.

Am SO SO glad I did stay as it was perfection. Staff, location, food, bed, bath, shower, room, coffee, wine......

They are very dog friendly (Ivy woofs "thank you for the sausage" BTW) too and there are great walks from the doorstep.

I think I may have found a new special place.

Great experience and amazing view over the river. Great to arrive by boat at high tide, good atmosphere, but also very peaceful with a great selection of drinks . Would highly recommend and will be returning! River is so beautiful in the evening it is hard to describe!

I stayed here one nigh visiting  a friend for his birthday. My room was perfect, quiet and good value and it included a great breakfast. The staff were all very helpful and their hygiene and safety procedures seemed well worked out and reassuring. The setting of the pub is fabulous on a tidal river.

Thank you Maltsters for an absolutely brilliant three night stay. Truly delicious food - exceptional dinner items included sea bass, duck, mussels and scallops. Breakfast was outstanding.
The rooms are fabulous.
Staff are very friendly, efficient and knowledgeable.
To have such good weather in early November was an added bonus. We are now feeling recharged and uplifted, ready to boss lockdown and start planning our return!

Large clean bedroom with very comfy Superking or Queen sized bed. We had the Radnor Arms room. Lovely view of the creek. The bathroom was ok.
We had dinner of 2 for 1 fish and chips sitting outside which was tasty.
Breakfast was good - I had avocado with poached eggs on sourdough and my partner had full English. Unfortunately although the menu offered fruit, there was none. 
The location on the creek is super- lots of boats, kayaks and sups came for lunch and dinner.  As the creek is tidal, we saw the swans, cygnets , herons at high tide, and dozens of Canada geese and egrets at low tide.
Definitely worth a visit

Riverside pub with rooms

We booked two nights at the Maltsters, we arrived on Sunday and were shown to the Nightingale room, a very good sized room overlooking the river, large comfortable bed, two armchairs and a coffee table. The large bathroom can best be described as traditional, roll top bath and a tiled shower cubicle in the corner. Everything was clean and well maintained.  We discovered that dinner service was last orders at 7pm. On entering the dining area we found that it was the Sunday roast menu,  and what a roast it was, plenty of beef and pork, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, 4 different veg.  Best roast we had had away from home for quite a while. 
Our 2nd night was the a la carte menu,  we tried the ham hock croquettes and the sardines followed by the duck cassoulet, there was an unfortunate accident with my duck in the kitchen so it turned up 10 minutes after the other portion, without asking they comped both the duck and my 2nd pint. The cheese cake was very good and the cheese plate was a large portion of good quality cheese. Also they have a good selection of real ales. 
The ordered breakfasts are good, we tried the full english and the eggs Royal was very good, there's not much else though apart from toast and cereals.
This was our 2nd visit and if in the area we will return, the only minus point was the tv in the room which didn't appear to work, we wouldn't normally bother with the TV but it was the last 5 minutes of the Euros, as it turned out we didn't miss anything !!!

An enjoyable stay

The Maltsters a special place 

Booked a room (Duke of York) just for one night, room was nicely furnished and very adequate but noisy with intermittent sounds of plumbing or pumps, no AC but cool enough with window open.
We had also booked for dinner but on arrival were told that as they had a large party coming the only time they could accommodate us was at 6pm. which we declined.
However the kitchen redeemed itself the next morning with a superb breakfast(included in the very reasonable price), of a full English and real kippers and scrambled egg, toast and preserves, juice and excellent coffee. The staff overall were pleasant and helpful but a little stretched.
Nice traditional creekside (dries at low tide) pub and B&B, would happily stay again if in the area.

My new special place

Good but not brilliant. Arrival at reception was poor, we walked in to two members of staff (one even looked like he may have been the manager!) behind the bar who were in discussion, they didn’t even acknowledge our arrival - this must change. Start with the customer and work backwards!!! 
Food was good, rest of the service was good, location is super, rooms okay but a bit tired. We will come back as it’s a great stop off.

Good

Firstly, the tiny lanes that you have to drive through to get to it are not for the faint hearted; just go very slowly. The location is superb and the building is really charming, but it is starting to get a little shabby around the edges. Likewise there are reviews on here from several years ago mentioning that some power sockets were not working, they still aren’t. Owner, sort this out. It is not acceptable.
The food is truly excellent. Everything we had was first class in quality and quantity. The staff are great, particularly Alex and Charlotte.
All in all it’s a bit like a loveable old uncle. Once was really classy and distinguished but is starting to look a little ropey and could do with some personal attention. However still retains that old school charm and elegance, for now at least.........

Charming but a little shabby around the edges.

This was a last minute stop over on the way to Cornwall because it looked like nice and quiet not our normal busy chain as we know the West Country is extra busy at the moment.  The location right on the river is superb and our huge room overlooked it, just happy sat in bed watching the ducks.
The only downside is the narrow access road which was very stressful after a long journey and we were very pleased to eventually get there and start to unwind.
The outside wasn’t quite as smart as I had expect but the inside and the friendly service more than made up for that. We didn’t have an evening meal as we had eaten lunchtime and it wasn’t really a snack or supper menu for us. The breakfast was delicious and we left refreshed and ready for the onward journey.
It was one of the loveliest places we have stayed and we would love to return again if we can brave the narrow lane but that probably what keeps it so special.
We are prepared for staff difficulties this holiday but everything was fine
