YHA Helvellyn - Hostel

YHA set in a stunning location, basic accomodation with easy access to the Lake District set in stunning scenery.Good food, friendly staff and excellent value for money.

Fantastic youth hostel with amazing staff well trained and kind happy to help you with any problems or requests , beautiful hostel right in the mountains 🏔️ beautiful building in keeping with the local scenery, easily accessible and fun to spend time in and around , lovely food 🥑 and facilities yha is great

Staying in Patterdale and fancied a walk up to the lead mine from Glenridding. I couldn't tell from googling whether YHA Helvellyn had a cafe or not, although I could see they offer breakfast and evening meals. I'm delighted to report that they have the Hole in the Wall cafe where you can call in and have wonderful cake and hot drinks - inside or outside, depending on the weather and your preference. The staff were extremely helpful and pleasant and we really appreciated the opportunity for a hot drink, a sit down and some great cake. So stride out with confidence and take the opportunity for some reasonably priced refreshment in amazing surroundings.

I love YHA's I think value for money and quality they can't be beat. I stayed in a land pod this time and it was brilliant. Its not fancy but practical, enough space, very cosy, comfortable beds and very quirky. If I had the option at all hostels I think I would choose a pod just for value and the extra privacy. The hostel itself at Hellveyln is set in the most beautiful location and incredibly placed to crack on with some of the best mountains. The facilities are spot on, lovely new bathrooms, well equipped kitchen, the social areas and bar and really pleasant places to be and to top it off the staff here are fantastic, really lovely genuine people. I wish I posses the ability to do this place justice as it really is a gem of a place. 

Warm welcome, modern facilities, in an awesome location. All the usual great catering options and self catering too. Staff really helpful and friendly. Private room was clean and showers and toilets exceptionally clean. Would definitely return! Just be aware you need to travel off road for last section of approach - most cars will be ok but not if low suspension

Another super friendly YHA in a fabulous location up in the mountains. Visited this weekend with my 7 year old son to do some walking. Decided not to climb Helvellyn, which was our original plan, as quite wet and windy. Did a great walk all around Aira Force, which is just down the road, instead. We were very well looked after at the hostel by the friendly staff. Also took advantage of the free food for kids. We both had very tasty English breakfasts and evening meals making the weekend tremendous value for money. Thank you so much to all the staff for making it such and enjoyable Dad and Lad weekend!

We stay in a lot of YHAs and this one is definitely up there with the best! We had a really great stay in the Landpod with our dogs. The scenery and surroundings were amazing, with the path to Helvellyn just outside the door. The ghyll running across the bottom of the hostel was stunning too. All the staff were friendly, Jess being the stand out for us, she seemed genuinely interested in what we had been up to and nothing was too much trouble for her. The breakfast was fantastic and a great way to start each day, great value. 

My only comment would be if you're not used to winding country roads then the drive to the hostel will seem hairy for you as it is essentially a footpath! However it's the price you pay for an exceptional location.

We received a really warm welcome at YHA Helvellyn from Will and his team on a busy bank holiday weekend. We had experienced a traumatic accommodation scenario at a nearby pub in Pattersdale. The staff were very welcoming and friendly on our arrival. The hostel was really clean and tidy (although perhaps a little warm) and the breakfast was delicious.

Excellent YHA in a beautiful location perfect for walking Helvellyn

Me and my fiance stayed here for 1 night at the hostel didnt know what expect as never been to one before but when checked in was pleasantly surprised staff very welcoming hostel very clean view from room was nice also went hiking up the mountains was beautiful scenery will definitely come back in future

Absolutely brilliant, it's a good walk up from Glenridding or a drive on partially uneven surfaces.
The location is great, with the river and falls flowing down the side it has a fantastic alpine feel.
Easy access to Helvellyn with a ridge or non ridge route if continuing up from the hostel and heading back down you can then then go up to Glenridding Dodd or Sheffield Pike.
It's a 30ish minutes walk up or down to Glenridding proper where you can buy most things you might need if you didn't bring it or forgot, the essentials like teabags, pies couscous salad and hummus. There's a pub perhaps halfway or so towards Glenridding.
The food is straight forward and nothing fancy and bangers and mash was the best of the tree I ate, I also had a chicken burger and fish and chips and none were huge portions but just a normal amount for a normal person so big fat fatties might be disappointed or want extra sides, also I ate breakfast on the last morning.
They have beer if that's what you want, tea and coffee or other snacks, cake, chocolate, crisps etc.
The hostel is clean and tidy, the showers are very good with enough pressure, there's a dry room and it has parking.
You can bring and cook your own food and the kitchen has plenty of plates,cups, bowls, glasses, they have a few cafetiers (coffee press) the cups are small so you might want your own mug or pick up a tourist mug to use.
WiFi could be better as there's no signal, I think that's my only complaint, WiFi is only available in the common areas so you might want to download your films and series before.
I found the beds comfortable, but another guest said she didn't, bed comfortableness is personal and unless it's a lumpy bumpy rickety old flea ridden bed bug infested mattress I can't take that into account for the review.
So all in all a good place to stay.

Me and my friend booked in on the  26th for two nights, departing today and from start to finish our stay was amazing. I’ve stayed in secret YHA hostels in the Lakes but this is the best imo. The location off the beaten track is just breathtaking. I was told there was five staff, i only encountered two. Two guys who did reception/chef and for all we know cleaned and everything besides. The place is spotlessly clean.  The showers and toilets are immaculate which can’t always be said for hostel accommodation.Recently upgraded, is warm and welcoming, and although we only had continental breakfast which was plenty, we ate there both evenings and the food was very reasonably priced and very tasty with options for veggies/vegan. The nearest pub about a mile away but they served bottled and canned alcohol if wanted. It’s on the hugely popular Helvellyn walk so in demand id say. Would highly recommend for those on a budget and a good atmosphere on an evening.
