Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Walmar. Friendly hosts, amazing breakfast, central location, clean comfortable rooms. What more can you ask for? Parking is on a steepish hill behind the guest house, and cars are parks behind each other in the enclosed car park but we didn't have any issues at all. Already looking forward to returning!

I'm pretty appalled by some of the reviews of the Walmar on this site.  Firstly, it is a small, family run B&B with hosts who genuinely care.  I think they probably treat people as they are treated and I always found them to be chatty, kind and generous with their time.  The breakfasts are delicious - so what if it's only served between 8.30am and 9 - this is not a multi-national hotel chain.  The service is quick and the food piping hot and excellent quality.  I had the single room and the bathroom was small and a bit dated but clean with everything in working order.  Large wardrobe with plenty of hangers.  Bed linen was really good quality and the bed comfy.  It's a two minute walk into town.  I think Doreen and Malcolm would be hurt by some of the snipey comments on here - people should remember that this B&B is amazing value for money and if you want perfection and ultimate luxury, you need to pay for it.  I am planning to return to the Lakes later this year and will definitely be staying at the Walmar.

Some reviews on here are absolutely unnecessary and I can only believe it’s because the vast majority of the human population enjoy a good moan. Anyway... 

We’ve just got back from a three night stay at Walmar b&b and it was absolutely lovely. We were given a friendly welcome upon arrival, landlord helped us carry our cases up to our room and then explained the car park situation to us which really was not a problem. If you’re not using your car at all that day, park it at the top. If you need it out, they liaise with other guests the most suitable place for cars to go. It’s not a time consuming thing and it’s not a hassle, plus it’s a FREE car park at the back! What more do people want? 

The landlord took genuine interest in our plans for the weekend and we told him we’d be climbing Scafell Pike. He gave us some good tips, gave us a book full of restaurant/pub recommendations for after the climb, and said that should we not return for any reason they would alert mountain rescue. Personally I think that’s great, they don’t have to do that. 

Room was spot on. Clean, spacious, TV, tea and coffee, clean bathroom. 

The breakfast was gorgeous. Yes it’s 8.30-9 but you don’t have to eat your breakfast and be out by 9, it’s just when it’s served - and let’s be honest, it’s only the two of them cooking, cleaning, doing everything for their guests, so I don’t blame them for not wanting to wait around for people to roll out of bed at 11.30 expecting a sausage sandwich! Get up and eat and go back to bed, or better still, go and enjoy the day. 

As for the clock-in system, that is literally so that they know whether to come into your room to start cleaning. We were in one day just after midday, so the landlord knocked and simply asked if we wanted fresh towels. All good.

On Easter Sunday we had a full English and two little Lindt bunnies were on the table waiting for us - and other guests - again, a lovely touch.

Don’t listen to other reviews. We didn’t feel encroached on by any means. It was a great stay, nice private clean room, with very friendly hosts who just want you to have the best stay possible.

Walmar House is an older property, centrally placed in the town. I stayed here for a week while on a singing course.The owners were very pleasant and helpful. It doesn't pretend to be boutique hotel, but it is a good, honest B & B. The single room, although fairly small, had everything I needed. The bed was comfortable with nice quality linen. It was spotlessly clean and I was particularly impressed with the generous provision of tea & coffee etc. The cooked breakfast is to be highly recommended.
I had noticed comments about the car parking and the owner said that at busy times double parking was necessary, but he explained how it could be sorted. In the event, since I was staying for a week and didn't know when I'd need access to my car, I parked in the public car park next door - £30 for the week.
I thought this B&B excellent value for money and would certainly stay here again if I return to Ambleside.

Basil Faulty is alive and well and Sybil is a miserable malcontent.  God forbid you turn up to breakfast 'early', and by early I mean literally five minutes... FIVE MINUTES! I'm traumatised and my GP has had to put me on Antidepressants for acute stress disorder.  Plus, if you don't like hot water for bathing and showering, it's great, because there isn't any.  I've bathed in warmer arctic glacier waters.
Big tip, don't make eye contact with the landlady as she will misconstrue this as a 'come on' and you really don't want her knocking on your door at two am (this caused me to sweat on more than one occasion, which is ironic considering it was the only time I was warm during my whole stay here.

Overall, avoid if you like to enjoy your time away.

Well where do I start?

well I can t agree with the last review, I feel basil and Sybil run a tight ship how refreshing to be monitored when in or out, it made me feel wanted and safe, I made sure to clock in and out on the sliding board!
entertainment musical cars in out, up and down prompt moving when time to leave.
very comfortable bed clean and tidy, envigorating showers morning noon and night,
breakfast timely and ample, a particular delight the aldi,s beans gave a certain crunch
host smiled once it may have been wind, im not sure.
I recommend this b&b after a long drive south it was nice to be welcomed into the heart of the lakedistrict with no lights stumbling to find the loo in the dark
