2F Hostel Taitung

I made a short-notice phone reservation with Old Dormitory, and although it was late in the evening an employee kindly waited for me at the entrance, providing a tour/overview of the hostel and explaining all the amenities. There are two buildings (both have free wifi), one is the very character-infused "old dormitory", which has a laid-back and comfortable artsy vibe. Inside there's a shower, living room with TV and seating, coffee/tea/water, fridge, microwave, countertop, and pamphlets/information including bus schedules, maps, and things to do in the area. Outside there's a wash area, washing machine, and very cool open-air hand-built mini kitchen for any food prep you might want to do. There are a number of options, including private rooms or mixed bunks, each a little different. I stayed in the more basic mixed loft (inside, up a few ladder steps) with mattresses/outlets/lights/curtains, but it was a cozy stay and those mattresses/blankets were incredibly comfortable (I slept wonderfully, I can't explain it!). The second building is right across. You go up a flight of metal stairs to something of an open-air hallway (indoor/outdoor mix), with a more traditional row of rooms with bunk beds. The hall lounge is quite comfortable with tables and platforms for working or socializing, and large chalkboards on the wall listing useful information. When mosquitoes start nipping in the evening, you can move to your room instead of the hall (in the first building the living room is already indoors so it's not a problem). There are a handful of shower stalls (I was pleased that they run hot water), a bathroom, and a long isle of taps and artfully arranged mirrors for washing up. I stayed in both buildings on separate occasions during my visit to Taidong, and found both to be very charming and good for the price (it was Chinese New Year so the rate was understandably a bit higher than usual). I really enjoyed the environment and unique character of Old Dormitory, as it definitely added to the experience of visiting a colorful place like Taitung. The location is very convenient, within easy walking distance of the bus station, visitor's center, music village, art street, temple, and downtown food/shopping/market. The hostel provides free bicycles to borrow, and surfing/scuba rentals and instruction (though I didn't inquire about this). The employee who got me situated both times was attentive, friendly, super helpful, spoke great English, and advised on places to go/see/eat and how to get around.
