Fantastic
2 reviewsHere's some info if you are considering staying at De En Gorge Guesthouse: LOCATION 1) This ecological guesthouse is smack right in the midst of valleys and trees. 2) It's a 10 minute drive to the nearest village (Maolin Village). 3) Shops in Maolin probably close early. ACCOMMODATION 1) There's a double bedroom, a room for 4 or 5 and a campsite (rates start from NT$2,500, which includes a hearty breakfast and a night tour). 2) Rooms come with air-con, warm showers and window screens to keep insects out. 3) But seem to lack hooks to hang our clothes (or at least in our room). 4) You'll have to bring your own toiletries (including towels). LIVING AMONGST NATURE 1) There are some dogs, a cat and some chickens on the grounds. 2) Despite the window screens, chances are that some of the creatures living around will still sneak in (e.g. spiders, lizards, etc) - but that is all part and parcel of living in a place like this. TRANSPORT 1) Consider getting your own. It will make your exploration of the area much easier. 2) You can email Da Tou - who runs the place how to get there if you do not have your own transport. MEALS 1) Breakfast/Dinner includes a variety of home cooked local dishes. Chances are you'll be full before you can finish everything. 2) They can cater to special requests, e.g. vegetarian. Email or call ahead. 3) Dinner needs to be ordered in advance (NT$300/pax). FACILITIES 1) There is free wifi in the main dining area. 2) There is a vending machine selling drinks, but bring some of your own just in case. SERVICE 1) The owners of the guesthouse are great and very friendly. 2) Da Tou, who runs the place responded to my emails very promptly. 3) Note that this is very much a no frills place. MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE Love this place for: 1) The great hospitality 2) The home cooked local meals 3) The closeness to nature 4) The night tour (bring shorts). But will not recommend it to anyone looking for modern city comforts. HOW I GOT THERE 1) Bus 8218 from Pingtung Bus Station (next to 7-11) on the left of Pingtung Train Station after exiting (NT$120; about 1hr). 2) Got off at Dajin - the last stop and took a local taxi (NT$300; about 15-20 min) Note: Intervals between buses can be as long as 1 hour; and there may not be a taxi when you get off the bus, so best to call or email ahead.
