Berggasthaus Golderli

We stayed at Bergasthaus Golderli as part of an inn-to-inn hiking tour. Golderli was our most "primitive" inn and the one I had the lowest expectations for - it ended up being my favourite!
The beds are the most comfortable we slept on in 3 weeks in Switzerland and Germany, including fancier hotels. The setting is so idyllic and peaceful. 
The food was delicious and the hosts were accommodating and helpful. Alexandra  was very tolerant of my limited German (though her English is excellent as well) and helped us understand the situation with our planned hiking route. Best of all, she set out breakfast (the WHOLE breakfast) an hour early so we could get an early start on our hike. We got over Hohturli pass and down to Oeschinensee with plenty of time to take a nice swim well before the thunderstorms rolled in. 
When we stayed the inn was not very crowded; there were two or three other groups. I can imagine it would be more onerous to manage the showers and bathrooms if there were more people, but for us everything was perfect.

DrD1971 and WolfJTN which explain the guesthouse in more depth, but I just wanted to add my thoughts on what a refreshing break this has been. A real change of pace and tone from sterile hotel chains. Our host could not do enough to make guests comfortable, dinner was a really delicious, hearty home-cooked meal served together with other guests in the dining room, with a wood fire… and when was the last time you were offered a second helping of your main course? A hiker’s haven.

Six of us hiked to Griesalp over the Sefinenfurgge pass and got caught in a rain and sleet storm while descending from the pass. What a relief it was to see the Golderli finally appear through the fog and experience the warm haus and the even warmer hospitality of our hosts. Because of the weather there were few others staying that evening, but that didn't dampen the service we experienced. Alexandra went way beyond expectations with our lodging, meals and taking care of details, even volunteering & bringing us two electric heaters to dry our clothing and washed clothing. The spread they set for our dinner was over the top! Breakfast was also good. She even had a wood fire going in the old wood stove. Keep in mind this is more of a pension/hostel than an upscale hotel so facility wise, it is old Swiss chalet living. Homey. (which we love) The friendliness and service, however, was as good as any 5 star I ever stayed in. We will definitely be back since the weather kept us from seeing the beauty surrounding Griesalp. When we do, there is no doubt the Berggasthaus Golderli will be where we stay!

We hiked from Murren to Golderli in a day and were on ourway to Kandersteg the next day. can I say that this is a really marvellous 2 day trip. Quite hard and some quite steep sections but breathtaking views and not very busy.

My Swiss friend chose this hotel because its at the head of the valley and is thew first hotel you come to. That saved us another15-20 minutes walk downhill and then another 20 minutes uphill the next day to get back to the path. To my mind a big consideration when you have 2 relatively tough days.

The first thing you see is a large welcoming terrace with umbrellas and nicely dressed tables. Very welcoming.

The building itself is very traditional, but was been restored in 1994. It has always been a rustic inn, and has a history going back into the 19th Century when the Kiental Valley was a big tourist attraction. Now its a delightfully quiet and sleepy farming hamlet. 

We had 2 double rooms at the top of the building. Its a charming old Swiss building but the beds were super comfortable. i went expecting to use sleeping bag liners but the sheets were crisp and freshly ironed. A great treat.

The bathroom is shared on the same floor but pretty well fitted out by hut standards. the shower is in the basement but it was a great shower with buckets of hot water and clean towels on the beds.

The owner worked very hard to provide us with the best experience. The supper was 4 course and was very hearty. Our group really enjoyed the food and the service.

The owner got up early to set out breakfast for us at 6.30. The spread was amazing and a great start to the day. We bought pack lunches for the day ahead which were great. The bread was home made.

All of this was inclusive in the price. Great value in my view. I was charmed by this hotel and all our group loved it.

Sometimes it’s good to do something different. For us, on a walking vacation from village to village in the Swiss alps, this was something different and something good: an isolated guesthouse in a beautiful setting off the grid (no WiFi, no cellular, no television, no electrical outlets in the rooms: we came prepared with an external battery and watched a downloaded movie about climbing the Eiger on my phone after dinner). 

The rooms are simple but clean, well insulated from the outside (although we chose to keep the windows open despite the high 40s Fahrenheit outside and rely on the very nice comforters to stay cozy), perfectly adequate accommodations with comfortable beds. We enjoyed a good homemade dinner (a hearty soup and the Swiss variation on beef stroganoff with rosti). 

If you want your own bathroom, you’re out of luck (bathrooms are down the hall, showers in the basement) so if the guesthouse were busy, that might be an issue. But at least on our visit it wasn’t. [Worth noting: there are private rooms, shared rooms, and bunk rooms (the one in the basement sleeps 10 in 5 bunk beds!).]

It’s a rural setting: cows, goats, and lamas (!) in the surrounding pastures. The lamas were entertaining and a source of wool. 

The co-owner who some commenters didn’t appreciate proved to be quite friendly and welcoming, particularly after we asked about life in the mountains and running an isolated guesthouse (it’s not all that isolated: Golderli is about a 15 minute walk across a stream to Griesalp where there are two small standard mountain hotels and the bus stop when you’re ready to stop hiking).

We’d be happy to stay again.



A pension not an hotel. Quirky old building. Hearty food. We arrived very wet and the owner put heaters on to dry our boots. Not ensuite, maybe there would be a queue for showers if it were very busy.  Bedroom was basic but the bed remarkably comfortable. I would be happy to return to this quiet and peaceful place.

We loved this charming rustic traditional Swiss Pension

Quaint and comfortable

Being a group of 6 people, we spent a night at the Golderli. The purpose of our visit was a 2-day backcountry skiing trip in the wonderful Kiental. 

The guest house is pretty rustic but charming. It has a very nice restaurant with fur on all chairs. Dinner was extremely delicious and the breakfast buffet was at the top end for such a guest house. 

Please be aware that the sleeping rooms are not heated during winter time. As such, the temperature in the rooms may be lower compared to what you may expect.

The host could be a little bit more cordial. Despite being friendly, she gave the impression that she doesn't really like staying at this place. 

During winter time, the Golderli can only be accessed by foot, on skis or with snow shows. The street up to Griesalp and the Golderli is closed. 

The guest house does not offer WiFi. Additionally, mobile phone connection is very limited in this area.

Rustic place with excellent cuisine

If you have another option in the area, grab it. I suppose the room was clean. The staff were unfriendly. The walls are paper thin between rooms as well as the sound traveling between the floors. There is one washroom on each floor shared by 6 double rooms. Only 2 showers, in a damp, dark basement for all the guests. I couldn't wait to leave in the morning.

I can't say enough bad things about this place

So we stopped for one night during a walking holiday. The advertising is clear that this is a pension rather than a hotel. When we arrived we were told that the bedrooms did not have keys. This was ok however the reason in the case of our room was that the door did not close. The bed we had should have been replaced many years ago. Take earplugs because you can hear everything in adjacent rooms and corridors. There are insufficient toilets unless you are happy to queue for 10-15 minutes in the morning. The same applies to the showers. On the plus side the food in the evening was well cooked and tasty. Dinner is a single serving at 1830.  The younger staff who served us in the evening were very good at their jobs, this was not the same for all staff.
